Every year, ACTJCL gives individuals awards for their efforts throughout
the year. Congratulations to this year's winners and below you will find some of their highlights of the year.
Player of the Year (Girl) - Erin Milne (Lyneham High)
- Under 16 Champion
- =5th ACT Junior Championships
- 1st at several Boot Camps
- Represented Lyneham High School and ACT at ASTC Championships and got a perfect score
- Recipient of Player of the Year 2018
Player of the Year (Boy) - Dexuan Kong (St Joseph's School)
- Under 12 Champion
- 3rd Under 16 Championship
- 4th ACT Junior Championships
- 2nd Autumn Allegro
Most
Improved - Minchen Yang (Turner Primary)
- 4th Under 14 Championships
- Under 12 Champion

- Increased his rating 325 points for the year

- Played in almost every tournament this year (includes junior, club and adult events)

Best Newcomer - Mia Callaway (Caroline Chisholm School)
- 2nd Under 16 Championships
- Placed highly in several competitions throughout the year
- Represented Caroline Chisholm and ACT at ASTC Championships
Volunteer of the Year - Kate Woodley
- Kate has been volunteering at the ACTJCL for many years
- Kate organised the 2019 Australian Schools Team Chess Championships in Canberra and the tournament was a huge success
End of Year Transfer Event
Thank you to all who came and participated in our final event of the year. The day featured families, friends, transfer and a pizza party.
The tournament was a round-robin and the tournament ended with two teams equal first. After an intense playoff, the kids emerged
victorious with Lachlan and Dexuan beating Willis and Leonard to take first place. Meanwhile, sibling duo, Dillon and Athena beat Alana and Miles in the playoff match
for third place.

Summer School Holiday Chess Boot Camp - Tuesday 21- Friday 24 January 2019 - flyers attached
Coaching and Lightning
Tuesday 21 January
At the Summer Boot Camp – Chess Coaching and Lightning day, players will have a morning of top quality coaching from some of Canberra’s best
coaches. Coaching will take place in ability based groups over 3 x 1 hour sessions. The afternoon is taken up by fun event “Lightning”. Each coach will present a prize for outstanding effort on the day. Awards in the Lightning event will include 1st , 2nd
and , 3rd overall, with additional prizes awarded based on the number of entries received and there will be lucky draw prizes too!
Allegro Wednesday 22 January
If you enjoy playing chess, ACTJCL
is inviting you to participate in the fun event “Allegro Chess” this Summer School holidays. Allegro chess playing conditions are the same as the school championships (that is, games are played with clocks with each player having 15 mins to complete his/her
moves) but children compete as individuals.
Long time control tournament
Thursday 23 - Friday 24 January
The Boot Camp L T tournament is a two-day rated event for players born on or after 1 Jan 2000, played with long time controls (60 + 10s) on Thursday 23rd Jan & Friday 24th Jan 2020 at Campbell High hall. Players
are expected to record moves but if your child has never recorded moves before or has never played long time control games of chess in a competitive environment, please let us know and we’ll provide some instructions for practice prior to the tournament. Please
contact us to discuss the format if you are at all unsure.
