ACT Junior Chess League vs South Australia Junior Chess League Teams Online Tournament

The ACT wins (just)!

On Sunday 20th February, an eighteen strong ACT representative junior team played a South Australian representative junior team in an online tournament.

The event ran for six rounds with a 15 minute plus 5 second time control. Under the scoring system, every player contributed to their teams final standings.

Although the ACT team took a commanding lead in the early rounds, the South Australian team made a strong comeback in the second half of the event, resulting in a narrow ACT victory (59-53). The true value of the tournament lay in our juniors being able to face strong juniors who they wouldn’t normally encounter, under supervised tournament conditions. This, of course, has been difficult in recent years with event cancellations and border closures.

Thanks to all of the junior players who took part in this event. Thank you to SAJCL President Alan Goldsmith for organising the South Australian team and to Alan and Eric Staak for being arbiters at the Chess Centre of South Australia. Thank you also to our Chief Arbiter, Shaun Press

Congratulations to our ACT representative team (see team listing below) and to Minchen Yang and South Australian junior James Boyd-Norman who finished equal first in the tournament on 5.5/6.

The South Australian Junior Chess League has proposed a rematch, which I hope will happen in the middle of the year.

If your child would like to participate in events like this, please sign them up for an ACTJCL membership. Membership costs $15 per year for individuals and $20 per year for families.
