Upcoming Tournaments:
2018 UNDER 8 Chess Championship - Calling all of Canberra's tiniest champions - The ACTJCL Under 8 Chess Championship is on Sun 27th of May 2018.
Thank you to all the parents who have registered your child(ren) for the U8 tournament on Sun 27th May in advance.
Don't miss out!
If you are unsure if the Under 8 is suitable for your child, please do not hesitate to contact me. This event is suitable for all boys and girls born on or after 1 January 2010 who can confidently move the chess pieces around the board. If your child hasn't
played in a tournament before, this is a good one to start. Chess Clocks will be used and children who have not used clocks before, or have not participated in competitive chess before, will receive instructions and assistance (particularly in the early rounds).
Between 40 and 60 potential grandmasters have
contested in this event in each of the last few years, ranging from the very experienced to (almost) complete novices. All players compete for all rounds unless byes occur. Nobody is “eliminated” during the day. We
suggest all parents of “first-timers” stay for at least 1-2 rounds to be sure their child is comfortable & happy with their participation.
Seven rounds will be played with each player having 15 minutes to complete their moves (maximum game time 30mins).
We encourage early entries to Emma Guo at emma...@actjcl.org.au or SMS 0423 284 501, including child’s name, date of birth, school, current school year and a contact no. where a parent can be contacted on the day (though parents are most welcome to stay and enjoy the day with your child).
Please be reminded to dress warmly for the events.

Hi All,
In this email
Please be reminded to dress warmly for these events.
Please be reminded to dress warmly for these events.

Results - The 2018 Autumn Junior Weekender
Last weekend we ran our annual 2018 Autumn Junior Weekender. We had small numbers this year but a lot of enthusiastic kids came and played. In the end, the tournament was won by Sophia Boyce, who scored 6.5/7, only drawing her last round game. In second place, Dexuan Kong managed to score 5/7 after taking two half point byes on the Saturday.
I’d like to thank everyone who came and participated, especially those who were rushing from other activities in order to play our event. Once again thank you to Campbell High for allowing us to use their venue. For full results, check out the bottom of this email and don’t forget about this weekend’s Under 8 tournament!
