Summer Boot Camp 2018

Last week we started the year with three tournaments within four days. Over the course of four days, children were exposed to quality coaching, a blitz tournament, allegro chess, long-time control tournament and transfer. All tournaments were very exciting, with many players performing strongly in all time conditions.

I'd like to thank Campbell High School and everyone who came to the camp. I’d also like to thank all our wonderful coaches and congratulations to those who received the coaches’ award. I hope you all enjoyed yourself and hope to see you at our next event.  Make sure to check out the standings at the end of the email.

Upcoming Tournaments:

  • Autumn Junior Weekender
  • Under 8 Championship

2018 Autumn Junior Weekender - The Autumn Junior Weekender on Sat 19th & Sun 20th May will be ACTJCL's next (long time control) event.  The Autumn Junior Weekender is one of the major junior chess tournaments for the year.  With long time controls 60mins + 10s, players are expected to record moves but if your child has never recorded moves before or has never played long time control games of chess, please let us know and we’ll provide some instructions for practice prior to the tournament.   If in doubt, please do not hesitate to contact me to discuss the format.

Don't miss out!   If you have sport on the weekend, no worries, you are able to take byes throughout the weekend

The Autumn Junior Weekender is a great tournament for everyone to play and practice your long time control games, get your first long time control ratings or improve your ratings and are
suitable for most juniors (boys or girls born on or after 1 January 1998) especially all those who came to our Boot Camp and those who intend on playing in the ANU Open in July or those intending to represent your School & ACT in the Australian School Team Championship, even if you are not, this great tournament is for you.

We appreciate early entries for Autumn Junior Weekender to Emma Guo, at emma...@actjcl.org.au or phone 0423 284 501 (a/h) by Thursday 17th May, including child’s name, date of birth, school, current school year and a contact no. where a parent can be contacted on the weekend Late entries will be accepted if space allows.

Please see attached flyer for more information.

Under 8 Championship this Sun 27th May
(please see attached flyer)

2018 UNDER 8 Chess Championship -  Calling all of Canberra's tiniest champions - The ACTJCL Under 8 Chess Championship is on Sun 27th of May 2018.

Thank you to all the parents who have registered your child(ren) for the U8 tournament on Sun 27th May in advance.

Don't miss out!  If you are unsure if the Under 8 is suitable for your child, please do not hesitate to contact me.  This event is suitable for all boys and girls born on or after 1 January 2010 who can confidently move the chess pieces around the board.  If your child hasn't played in a tournament before, this is a good one to start.  Chess Clocks will be used and children who have not used clocks before, or have not participated in competitive chess before, will receive instructions and assistance (particularly in the early rounds).  Between 40 and 60 potential grandmasters have contested in this event in each of the last few years, ranging from the very experienced to (almost) complete novices.  All players compete for all rounds unless byes occur.  Nobody is “eliminated” during the day.  We suggest all parents of “first-timers” stay for at least 1-2 rounds to be sure their child is comfortable & happy with their participation.

Seven rounds will be played with each player having 15 minutes to complete their moves (maximum game time 30mins).

We encourage early entries to Emma Guo at emma...@actjcl.org.au or SMS 0423 284 501, including child’s name, date of birth, school, current school year and a contact no. where a parent can be contacted on the day (though parents are most welcome to stay and enjoy the day with your child).

Please be reminded to dress warmly for the events.
