North Junior Chess Club

North Junior Chess Club resumes on Friday 7th February 4-6pm at Radford College.  Welcome back to returning students and new participants are most welcome.  If you are new and would like to join us at North Junior Chess Club, please drop us an email and we'll give you more information plus reserve a spot for you or your child.   If your child is last term student but is not returning this term, please let us know immediately so that we can give your child's spot to someone else.  Thanks.

Australian Junior Chess Championships  

Congratulations to all ACT representatives who competed in the Australian Junior Chess Championships in the Gold Coast over January. A special congratulations to Athena Hathiramani who was crowned the Australian Under 16 Girls Champion and finished second overall in the Under 18 Girls section. Athena also claimed 2nd in the Under 16 Girls Lightning competition. Meanwhile, Lachlan Ho secured 3rd in the Under 16 Open Lightning competition.  Well done to everyone who participated and we look forward to hearing about your experiences amongst Australia's best. Summer Boot Camp 2020

Thank you to all participants who competed in the Summer Boot Camp during January.   We hope you all enjoyed yourself and learnt something during the week of coaching, blitz, allegro and long time control chess.   We'd like to thank Shaun Press, Jamie-Lee Guo and Mirabelle for assisting during the week and of course to Campbell High School.

Looking through the results, we can see that Turner Primary students were dominant throughout the week with all tournaments being won by a Turner student. Congratulations to everyone who participated. For full results please refer to the end of this email.

2020 ACT Junior Lightning Chess Championships

Lightning Chess is just what you think - it's chess played at lightning speed!  Each player has only 5 minutes on the clock to complete all moves.  It makes Lightning Chess fast, fun, and not for the faint-hearted!  Most normal rules of chess apply however if a King is left in check at the conclusion of a move (ie once a clock has been pressed) an opponent may claim a win as a consequence of an “illegal move.”  Games can then be won on time, by checkmate, and as a consequence of an illegal move but not by capturing the king!

When: Sunday 16th February 2020.  Registration opens 12.45 pm.  Players should be registered and ready to play from 1pm.  We welcome all players including new players to come along to this event and hope to see you there.  For more information, please refer to attached flyer.
