**Results: ACT Under 8 Championship**
Full results & crosstable appear at the end of the email
WOW!! What a great day with 43 of Canberra’s finest little chess players. It wasn’t a record – that happened way back in 2002 when we had 46 entries – but we were really, really close. This is usually the biggest U8 event held anywhere in Australia so it’s more than a bit exciting to be a part of the thrills and spills involved. Curtin Primary alone had 17 entries!
We were so lucky today as we had fantastic sportsmanship and a smiling outlook from the little competitors PLUS great helpers among the parents. Thank you everyone! Special thanks to Michael Smith, James Ashton, Jeff Suptut and Mirabelle Guo for all of their contributions – especially given none had their own children at the boards.
The event ran just as an U8 event should – in cheerful chaos. This year (in a first – I think) we had two pre-schoolers compete and both did a fantastic job of sticking to their games and making some clever moves. In fact we had a highly competitive field for the U6 award. At the top of the event we had several well known faces, being challenged by some new faces. Regular ACT players may even recognise the surname ALI on the list as we welcomed the son of Mos Ali to his first event – and a prize!
Congratulations to the champion – Siddhant Badrinarayan – a perfect score and now two in row.
Prizewinners:
1st place: Siddhant Badrinarayan – two time champion!
2nd place: Rhys Weston – eligible again next year!
3rd place: Lachlan Ho –our top unrated result
4th place: Zoe Sugerman – a veteran with four years in this event!
5th place: Aaryan Ali – in his first weekend event!
1st U6 – Will Bird – with some really outstanding moves to finish in =4th overall!
Encouragement Awards – Bronwyn McGauley & Uzay Yeniceri

Congratulations to Trinity Kings – Tuggeranong Interschool Champions by the narrowest 0.5 point margin – Dakota Sutherland, Joshua Ward, Isaac Mitchell & Lachlan France.
We would also like to congratulate Michael Goodchild (St Francis of Assisi Larks), Tom Vu (St Anthony’s Checkmates), Joshua Ward (Trinity Kings), Adrian Lo (Trinity Gold), Jeremy Firth (St Thomas the Apostle JJs) and Tony George (St Francis of Assisi Owls) achieving a perfect score on the day. This was an unusual number of perfect scores, especially among the Board 1 players who artfully managed not to play each other during the day!
Thank you to all those teachers and parents who assisted on the day and made it possible for the students to participate - your support is appreciated. A big thank you to our host school – Caroline Chisholm School – to Mr Sengstock, the supportive staff & students, and the patient people in the canteen!
The schools that have been invited to contest the Final are as follows: Trinity Kings & Platinum, Chisholm Cheeky Chess Champions, St Thomas the Apostle JJs & Rockets and St Anthony’s Bisholicious.
