I am curious to hear how each of your institutions manage/supervise early returning athletic teams.  Is it the responsibility of Residence Life, the coaches/teams and athletics or some other solution?  Also would you please indicate how you structure and pay the supervising entity?

Please note that I am less interested in how you check them in, rather how they are supervised?

Thanks in advance for your time on this matter.

In years when a team arrives before RA staff, coaches must live in the halls to supervise their teams. If there RAs are already on campus, we do not require this. There is no charge, as the RA staff is on campus anyway.

Incidentally, we have the same policy for those teams (basketball) who stay on campus during parts of Christmas Break. Of course the RAs are never on campus at that time, so all the athletes must move to one building (males to one male hall, and female to a female hall) so that the coach or assistant coach can supervise them.

Our Athletic Dept holds an orienation for those teams as they come and they give time to Residence Life to introduce themselves (RDs at least, if RAs aren't there) and go over ground rules for the dorms. We do not require coaches to stay in the dorms and place students in their assigned rooms. We end up with kids all over campus and feel like having them spread out in their own rooms reduces the party atmosphere that putting them all in a temporary buildling would create. Our RDs are on site all year round, and while they do not closely supervise the athletes, they do provide a presence that seems to keep things in check. We hold the coaches responsible for any rule breaking but as I stated before, things seem to go pretty smoothly.
