I assume one of you all might be upgraded to a recent macbook with 32 megs of ram and wondering
how it is going, and if there are any issues like running hot?  The alternative right now is to get one with 16 megs.

My six year old 8 meg macbook is getting ready to go out to pasture after an astounding run
of trouble free performance.  Still running great, but I am ready to speed up a bit.

Thanks to Seiss, Abe and Gerard for the nudge to get onto this machine

cheers
Saxon

I am running a 2016 MacBook Pro, 2.7/Core i7 with 16 GB of ram.

Seems like it is fine to me. I am not doing anything crazy with it.

No problems on my end.

I am still running a 2014 MacBook Pro with 16GB of memory… not doing anything crazy either. Pretty decent up to 3 story single family home (both 3D window and rendering). Begins to sweat when I’m modeling a 4 story multi unit complex - workable in 3D window but rendering drags. If your 6 year old MBP did not have flash storage - this will be you’re biggest gain IMHO.

The option of doubling 16GB to 32GB memory for $400 (currently) is too good to pass up. I know it adds up… but consider this from GS:

thanks all,  one nice item of note is that you save around 500 or so buying from the refurb apple site which is how I bought this machine.  Also you can get 18 months interest free financing if you choose.  One down side is they have done away with usb ports in favor of the newer type so you need to get an adapter.

cheers,

Shoegnome (shoegnome.com) has a great review of the top of the line power book and ArchiCAD.  I bought the one early this year but turned it in for an iMac. Needed it more than a portable, my 2012 PB is still fine for basic work or presentation.
For memory modules And upgrades in general, I am a long time fan - 20+ years, of Other World Computing or Macsales.com
They sell memory at less than half price that Apple sells. Refurbished models also.

The refeb mac store is right up the street from you on Elvas. If you buy from Amazon that is where it is coming from.

Hi Saxon,
I just looked through Jared’s site and couldn’t find it either.
He must have removed it or it’s buried somewhere under a different name…
It was a very lengthy, detailed review of the top of the line Power Book and Archicad. You may shoot him an email and ask for the link. Jared is very approachable and helpful.  I remember exchanging emails with him as his article has spurned me to purchase the MacBook Pro.

Thanks,

As for me, I just got tired of hearing the lap top fan going nuts whenever real work had to be done.

So I purchased a 32mb desktop iMac and the office is quite again.

Next purchase, hopefully this year, is a pencil driven, yes a pencil, 12” iPad Pro, at a cool $1000.

Then all I will need is an ArchiCAD iTunes app other than BimX.

Good to see people’s thoughts around this issue: I’ll add that for my part, I’m finally going to replace my 2011 MacBook Pro with the next release cycle: I will add that though clearly not useful for ArchiCAD per se, I bought an iPad Pro 12.5” first generation and Apple Pencil, and use it extensively: mostly Concepts app, some Morpholio and Trace, a fair amount Procreate, Redstick CAD some, BIMx a lot, and yes some uMake and Shapr 3D; even some OnShape for 3D mechanical / engineering stuff, and I use both Affinity Photo and Affinity Designer on iPad quite a lot, as right now I’ve been doing a lot more graphic design work and illustration work.

Concepts app has now been ported by the developers to Windows 10, so it’s useful on the Surface as well as iPad: I found I love sketching and refining rough ideas there, and bringing it into ArchiCAD or other 3D tools via either SVG or PDF to get snappable vector design elements - super effective workflow.

Miss all of you up there in Sac!

Saxon (et al):

Moved here for love about two years ago: married a year ago (we traveled to Guernsey, my home for the wedding) and was initially doing BIM consultation and arch design work for Minarc in Santa Monica - the last year I’ve been combining my past and present careers and tech writing / tech illustrating *about* BIM & CADD as a consultant to a consultant: our client is the Los Angeles Department of Water & Power.

About to push aggressively back into the arch viz space with a new workflow I’ve been developing using the Unity game engine... so it’s been about a year since I did any real arch design work (high end design focal point stair details, wild hidden interior garage door / shelving system details, special proprietary light gauge steel & foam insulation construction system detailing & BIM workflow for Minarc’s sister company MnM MOD) and I am missing that wicked bad.

How bout everyone up there- how’s the Sacramento design community faring?
