Hello all,
Do you have expertise in how to refer to groups of people in the U.S.? The NIH is requesting assistance with improving the terms used in PubMed. In later messages in this thread, Stephanie and others encouraged people to share the message with others.
Thank you,
Erin

A group at the National Institutes of Health is working to expand the MeSH (Medical Subject Headings) terms and concepts related to racial and ethnic populations in the U.S. MeSH is the underlying thesaurus, which is used to index, catalog, and search biomedical and health-related information in MEDLINE/PubMed. A more complete representation of terms will enhance the indexing which will then enhance knowledge extraction and reuse. We recently completed a similar project that resulted in the expansion of MeSH descriptors related to the social determinants of health. Our aim is to improve the ability for all to identify research publications in these scientific areas.
We are asking for 1-3 hours of your time to review the attached 3 coding sheets (located in the attached excel file) and provide your expert opinion with 2 tasks in mind:
The 3 coding sheets include
Our objective is to be as inclusive as possible while minimizing the burden to you to review the lists. In addition to the lists is a PowerPoint file that clearly describes the instructions for conducting this review. Please feel free to review only those lists and terms which you feel you have expertise in and pass on the others.
We really need your expertise to produce the best lists of terms and greatly appreciate your help and expertise.
All commenters will be also eligible for $200 honorarium from an NLM OET fund.
We are using the contracting company for honorarium so they also can submit their completed and signed forms using this online platform: https://app.smartsheetgov.com/b/form/396c685d65814053ae632da81109ec8f
If they prefer, they can email the forms to the email (amcdo...@blhtech.com) or send them in the mail (1803 Research Blvd, Suite 500, Rockville, MD 20850). Of course they can send them to me (dami...@nih.gov)
