The NC Natural Heritage Program is recruiting one or two field biologists to work in a temporary capacity conducting biological surveys of selected sites in the Mountains, Piedmont, Sandhills, and Coastal Plain during 2016. Work is funded with external contracts, which determine the priorities for surveys, scheduling, data entry, and mapping. The positions would be based regionally or in Raleigh, and successful candidates must be willing to travel within NC.

Division information
The Division of Land and Water Stewardship is a non-regulatory division within DNCR that provides information and assistance to support effective conservation. The office is an integral part of the state’s conservation efforts, and seeks to maintain a positive relationship with communities through partnerships with local, state, and federal agencies, industries, organizations, and private citizens.
The Natural Heritage Program is mandated by the state Nature Preserves Act of 1985 and the associated administrative rules, (1) to effectively identify through systematic research and recommend for conservation the natural areas which best exemplify North Carolina's natural heritage, (2) to facilitate development of a statewide system of protected natural areas in public and private ownership, (3) to formulate and disseminate rare species management recommendations, (4) to influence private individuals, corporations and public agencies which own natural areas to protect those areas, (5) to provide interpretation of biological information, and coordinate with and advise other agencies, (6) to involve and inform citizens and landowners, and increase public environmental awareness, and (7) to maintain information regarding the distribution and status of rare species to support designation under the Endangered Species Act. The N.C. Nature Preserves Act requires the preparation of a biennial Natural Heritage Protection Plan which identifies protection priorities for natural areas throughout the state.
Description of work
Conduct biological surveys of natural areas to identify and document natural heritage elements including rare plants, rare animals, and high quality natural communities. Survey and monitor natural areas for inclusion in the NHP inventory and database of natural areas. Use GPS points and ESRI products to create accurate maps of natural heritage elements. Write reports that completely and accurately describe natural areas and natural heritage elements, including NHP Site Survey Reports and Rare Plant and Rare animal survey forms.
Work is funded with external contracts, which determine the priorities for surveys, scheduling, data entry, and mapping. Work involves frequent travel throughout the region and may require some overnight in-state travel. Job duties will include working outside, traversing and navigating rough terrain in unfavorable environments.
Knowledge, skills and abilities
Ability to work independently to identify, map, and accurately describe occurrences of natural communities (using NHP Natural Community Classification system), and rare species (using current taxonomic references and NHP Rare Plant and Rare Animal Lists).
Advanced competence with ESRI ArcGIS software, GPS, and MS office applications (including Word, Excel, and Access); experience preparing technical reports; excellent communication skills, both verbal and written; excellent organizational skills; attention to detail; reliability; and the ability to work effectively independently and as part of a team.
Must possess a valid NC Driver’s license.
Training and experience requirements
Graduation from a four year college or university with a major in one of the agriculture, biological, engineering, environmental, natural resources sciences or closely related curriculum and two years of experience related to the area of assignment; or an equivalent combination of training and experience that provides the employees functional work experiences needed to perform the work of the position.
Degrees must be received from appropriately accredited institutions.
