The Beekeeper was selected for the 43rd Venice International Film Festival.[3] The film was the first of Angelopoulos's to use an already well-known actor, in this case, Marcello Mastroianni, who by that time had already won the Best Actor award at the 1970 Cannes Film Festival once and had been nominated twice for the Best Actor at the 35th Academy Awards and the 50th Academy Awards.

The film follows the journey of Spyros, a beekeeper, to various parts of Greece after his daughter's wedding. Spyros has just retired as a teacher and sets out on his annual journey in spring to move his bee hives to a series of locations with flowering plants. A girl hops on Spyros' truck, and travels with him. They visit Spyros' old friends and his wife along the way, and finally arrive at a theater owned by one of his friends, which is about to be sold. There, Spyros and the girl finally have an erotic encounter, long after Spyros has tried to coerce her into kissing but failed. The girl leaves after a few nights, before the movie ends with Spyros turning over his beehive boxes, causing him to be stung repeatedly by the understandably angry bees. The final scene sees the dying Spyros tapping on the ground, as he continues to suffer from more and more agonising stings, which reminds us of the tapping of his sick friend before Spyros left him in the hospital.

Janet Maslin criticized The Beekeeper in 1993, writing that it "wastes Marcello Mastroianni in his title role" and that "(n)ot even those inclined to dwell on the film's occasional honeycomb imagery or its heavy sense of foreboding will find much to command the attention," arguing that The Beekeeper is interesting only in the context of Angelopoulos's other two titles in his "trilogy of silence" (which also includes Voyage to Cythera and Landscape in the Mist).[4] It was also written in Time Out that the film "has a stately pace and a shortage of event or information that are a lot to take."[5] John Gillett for a London Film Festival screening praised The Beekeeper as having "wonderfully textured images by Arvanitis, a succession of beautifully sustained traveling shots, and an emotional intensity which moves to a grave, overwhelming climax."[6]

Ronald Bergan, in his obituary of Angelopoulos, described The Beekeeper as a "compelling film" which "could be called a metaphysical road movie".[7] In The Independent, however, Holly Williams in 2010 lauded the film as "ponderously paced but poignant" and stated that "the directing is assured, and the performances restrained and heartbreakingly believable."[8] Acquarello of Strictly Film School[9] called the work "a haunting, compassionate, and profoundly melancholic portrait of isolation, dislocation, estrangement, and obsolescence," referring to it as an "indelible chronicle" of the contemporary Greek society.[10]

Following the wedding of his daughter, stone-faced beekeeper Spyros makes an annual journey from the north of Greece to the south, traveling along with his hives. En route, he meets an erratic, young female drifter, with whom he strikes up an unusual, self-destructive relationship.

It's still very early to call, especially since by all accounts this constitutes one of his more streamlined works, but Theo Angelopoulos certainly subverted my long-held expectations and assumptions of him. This is no more "inaccessible" than an Italian arthouse work (exempli gratia, Antonioni's quite similar Il Grido); I can also picture Vincent Gallo pointing to this partly as a mood inspiration for something like The Brown Bunny.

Agak sulit bagi saya menjelaskan sinopsis secara rinci dari film milik Angelopoulos satu ini. Menonton The Beekeeper seperti berkontemplasi--penonton seakan diajak untuk memaknai sebuah alur kehidupan.

It's a lovable and beautiful film from one of my favorite filmmakers. Mastroianni's performance makes it unforgettable. Poetic tone of Angelopoulos is what I love the most. In the opening scene, we see a single shot of an empty table in a rainy day and then touching words we hear from the main character:

- You are lucky. Listen. Doesn't sound like a song?
- What's that?
- It's the Virgins. Those who would like to be Queens and beat the doors of their waxen prison. They try to break them. But the others, the gaurds, sit up and fill the breaks.
- Why don't they let them out?
- Because they let only the one they chose for Queen out. The others are kept in case something happens to that first one. In a while, the drones will head for the water. They caught up on us, can you see them?

The film is set in a 18th-century Bavarian town, where a glass factory produces a rare piece of red ruby glass. The foreman of the glassworks is the only person that knows the secret to producing the mythical red ruby glass.

When he suddenly dies without revealing the secret, the local Baron who is also the factory owner becomes obsessed with the lost secret. Unfortunately, he is unable to discover the hidden secret and as a result he descends along with the rest of the town into depression and madness. The Baron begins to lose his sanity believing that the red ruby has magical powers. The whole story is presented through the eyes of Hias, a prophet who predicts the destruction of the factory.

Despite the fact that this utterly bizarre film has received some mixed reviews, it is one of the best works of Werner Herzog. It is a hidden jewel of art-house cinema that will definitely be a pleasant surprise for those who love the poetic world of Herzog.

Marcello Mastroianni stars as Spyros, a middle aged beekeeper, who embarks on a spiritual journey through the breathtaking landscapes of Greece. He is a retired school teacher in a midlife existential crisis. He makes this trip to not only cultivate his hives, but also find the true meaning of life. When Spyros meets a young girl, everything gets out of control.

On the other hand the performance by the great Marcello Mastroianni is absolutely sensational. This jewel of Greek art-house cinema was even nominated for the Golden Lion Award st Venice Film Festival.

Set in the village of Tremolat in France, the film follows the story of a troubled butcher Popaul (Jean Yanne) as he falls in love with the lonely headteacher of the local school Helene (Stphane Audran).

It is quite obvious that Claude Chabrol has managed to create a Hitchcockian thriller with unexpected plot twists. In addition, the sparse use of camera movement, the realistic performances and the great film score create a tense atmosphere. Moreover, Stphane Audran shines as a lonely headmistress who has to overcome her personal fears to solve these mysterious killings.

This unconventional film follows the story of a group of dead counselors who help the recently deceased people to select the single memory that they can take to eternity. It is like a social service office where they process the memories of the recently deceased in order to rest in peace. Once they have selected their best memories, a group of dead filmmakers and workers try to recreate and film these memories. The film is screened in a movie theater which is a passage to heaven.

On the other hand, this heartwarming drama is an allegory for the process of filmmaking as well as an ode to Japanese cinema. In addition, the realistic interviews, the simple but immensely powerful performances and the innovative script create one of the most beautiful movies of the Japanese art-house cinema.

This haunting metaphysical movie tells the story of an entomologist Niki Junpei (Eiji Okada), who goes on an expedition to search and collect specimens of sand insects. When he misses the last bus to town, the local villagers suggest that he stay at the bottom of a sandpit where a widow (Kyoko Kishida) lives in a shack.

Unfortunately, he soon finds out that he is trapped by the local villagers to stay forever with this mysterious woman as well as to help her in digging sand. He has to not only find a way to escape from this eternal prison, but also stop the advancing sand dunes.
