Well after the most recent Daylight Saving Time debacle with my ARIRC200 it's time to get a new internet radio, after all I've had this one for at least 4 years.

But I'd like one that:

  • Has AM and FM as well as internet radio.  (I know AM is hard to find)
  • Has at least 6 pre-set buttons
  • Naturally it has an alarm
  • Has a headset or speaker "out"
  • Has a "sleep" timer.  Hit it once and the radio will turn off automatically in XX minutes, hit it twice and the radio will turn off in XX minutes.

It would be great if it had USB, but I think I'm asking too much..so I'll live without it.

Any suggestions for a night stand radio that has all of these features.  Besides my existing ARIRC200 I don't know of another radio on the market that has everything that I want...and I won't buy one that doesn't.

Thanks for any suggestions.

There are no radios with all those features but any of the new ones with color screens should be pretty good. Reciva radios are the most popular such as the ones sold by Grace in the US. Here's a review of the Grace Mondo.  For AM/FM I would get a separate HD radio. The review is way at the end.  http://twit.tv/show/before-you-buy/9

BTW, Acoustic Research also has a new radio, the ARIR150. Not color but it's AM/FM and only $79.99 on Amazon.

Wow. That radio gets some bad reviews! It looks like it is just a
repackaging of our radio's components except for no preset buttons (at least
that I could see in the picture) and with even poorer firmware. At least
the physical design is a bit less ugly.

I checked out the Grace Mondo.  It looks nice.  There is a sale in Canada for another day.  17% off the cost of the radio, and free shipping.  Very tempting.

Thanks for the suggestion.

BTW, I love Twit.tv, and watched Leo's review which you suggested.

I only listen to a few regular stations so do'nt need a search or a built in database like the AR. I got a Sony Dash at Costco when I was in the States.  Love it. Has extra features plus a very good usb playback menu.  No fm tho.  Good alarm and dimming or blanking display.  Not for everyone, but if the feature set matches your needs, its a nice solid choice.

Just out of curiosity, is there a reason you need AM/FM? Most AM/FM
stations these days also have an Internet feed. Is there an AM/FM
station you listen to that doesn't?

Dennis,  I use FM for listening to a scanner I stream through a FM transmitter from my server. In the house, it's a cleaner signal. I use the internet stream on my Blackberry and office Internet radio when away from the house.  I guess it's just those little quircks and features that make a radio fit each person. What it very useful for us may not be for you.

Cheers!

Frontier Silicon based radios like the Coby IR850 all have FM since it's part of the processor board and you can sometimes find them cheap on ebay.

Thanks for all the great suggestions everyone.  I like AM/FM as a back up for if my internet goes down.  It doesn't happen often, but it's a nice back up.
