Help Stop Indefinite Detention!
Dear Avnish,
This week, the US Congress is considering counterterrorism legislation
that would allow indefinite detention without trial as well as
military attacks in violation of the laws of war. Those supporting
such changes are trying to slip the provisions into the National
Defense Authorization Act – a bill that must get passed to fund US
troops.
These vaguely worded provisions would allow for the prolonged
detention of people even after they are cleared of any wrongdoing, and
could exist long after 9/11 is a distant memory. The administration
hasn’t asked for more authority to conduct counterterrorism operations
and says it doesn’t need it. The potential changes might swell the
population of Guantanamo, which could remain open for decades.
The bill is moving quickly through the House of Representatives. Make
your voice heard! Write to your Congressional Representative and urge
him or her to vote no on these measures.
We need to work together to help preserve our rights.
