The film initially began development in 2008, with a planned release date for Marley's 65th birthday on 6 February 2010. Martin Scorsese and Jonathan Demme were attached at different points but both would depart from the documentary, with Demme citing creative differences.[5] The documentary was then put on hold until Macdonald signed on as director.[6][7]
It was released on 20 April 2012, and received critical acclaim.[1][2][8] The film was also released on demand on the same day, a "day and date" release.[9] The film features archival footage and interviews.
The soundtrack to Marley was released four days prior to the film, on 16 April 2012.[10] It contains 24 of the 66 tracks listed in the closing credits of the movie. The soundtrack's first single is "High Tide or Low Tide" which was released as a single on August 9, 2011 (2011-08-09).[11] The soundtrack's track list is arranged chronologically as it appears on the film.[12] It's the first record to feature the recording of Bob Marley performing "Jamming" at the One Love Peace Concert, where Marley joined the hands of Michael Manley and Edward Seaga, members of the People's National Party and the Jamaican Labour Party respectively.[12]
At Rotten Tomatoes, Marley holds a rating of 95%, based on 93 reviews and an average rating of 7.9/10, with the critical consensus saying, "Kevin Macdonald's exhaustive, evenhanded portrait of Bob Marley offers electrifying concert footage and fascinating insights into reggae's greatest star."[13] It also has a score of 82 out of 100 on Metacritic, based on 32 reviews.[14] However the film did receive criticism, with Bunny Wailer saying that the Rastafari part of Marley's life was underplayed. Furthermore, its opening in Jamaica was soured after the colours of the Ethiopian flag were placed on the ground, causing Wailer and others to boycott the opening.[15]
Well, to me, it's important. There's an interlude that I put on the Things Fall Apart record. The album starts with an argument from [the 1990 film] Mo' Better Blues in which Denzel Washington and Wesley Snipes' jazz musician characters are arguing about just the disposability of the art form.
Green agrees and believes it would have been "inauthentic" and a "disaster" to anglicise the tone of the film but understood that using solely Patois could make the project inaccessible to a wider audience.
There had been discussions within the cast and crew about including subtitles, but Green's thought process was that if the wider audience understood every third word, the emotions of the film would translate the rest.
The film opens in 1976 in Jamaica - a time of political division in the independent nation. Marley was already a star by then and had tried to remain politically neutral while political shootings occurred across Kingston.
"Where he was created, where his artistry was created, where his relationship, his marriage was created, they were really like anchoring points for him. So, it would be a little bit of an injustice if we didn't film there," says Lynch.
ReMastered: The Miami Showband Massacre, which was released on March 22, 2019, And directed by: Stuart Sender. This film tells the story of the popular 1970s group that was somehow found itself involved with a religious war when their bus exploded as a result of explosives being placed at a fake checkpoint.
Bob Marley's universal appeal, impact on music history and role as a social and political prophet is both unique and unparalleled. Directed by Academy Award-winning director Kevin Macdonald (The Last King of Scotland), MARLEY is the definitive life story of the musician, revolutionary, and legend, from his early days to his rise to international superstardom. Made with the support of the Marley family, the film features rare footage, incredible performances and revelatory interviews with the people that knew him best.
I'll admit freely that I hadn't looked at any biography of Mr. Marley (please tell me you didn't think this movie had anything to do with that dog film starring Owen Wilson? Thanks), so maybe that helped or it didn't while watching this. But I think this is as accurate and fully explored as far as biographies go. It covers quite a lot of ground and is a really satisfying look behind the curtains of a man that more than influenced (music) history.
It might be a bit too long for some, but the time is needed to explore as much as I stated above. If you like the music or music in general and don't mind documentaries, you can't go wrong with this one (throwing in a few songs for good measure).

Kingsley Ben-Adir é o Marley do filme.
