to ACM Women At FSU
Hi everyone,
I just finished transcribing the minutes from today's coffee meeting.
We brought up a lot of things cross-topic. Here are the minutes in
email form:
Group Designs
Since many of us expressed a preference for Heidy’s second design
(with the ascii background), she is going to address some of our
concerns by making the acmw font a little bolder and adding “Florida
State University” to the logo. Heidy also expressed some interest in
making t-shirt designs in the future. We can all still vote on final
designs or express preferences.
Reaching out to Women
------------------------------------
We were discussing a need to reach out to freshman women to help them
stay in the program, and WIMSE (Women in Math, Science, and
Engineering) was brought up (http://wimse.fsu.edu/). Since they work
extensively with incoming freshman (and even have their own dorm),
they would be optimal to talk with. Caitlin is talking with Dr.
Blessing who works with WIMSE.
If we can design some t-shirts that are very appealing to women and
that are inexpensive, we could give t-shirts out as prizes at Market
Wednesday for women solving logic puzzles. Heidy is looking into t-
shirts, and I’m looking into finding some nice logic puzzles.
Some sort of fun event, like learning how to make games and program
with (ALICE http://www.alice.org/), might be a fun event to invite
WIMSE, Market Wednesday women, and incoming freshman to in the future.
Student Mentoring
---------------------------
Alejandro has the list of peer mentoring students, and he is about
ready to send an email out to gather for a meeting. We like his idea
of mentors having specific computing interests in which to match
mentees (e.g. if you like computer security, talk to Sarah). It can
also be a great networking experience for incoming freshman.
ACM-W Room
---------------------
We heard that ACM-W might be able to have a small office in LOV. We
are trying to get the office. We could fit a desk and computer in
there and store all of our stuff.
