Hi everyone,

Heidy Khlaaf sent me two new ACM-W designs, and I would love to hear
opinions and/or votes. I uploaded the file in the "Files" section
called "acmw.jpg".

Fantastic! These new designs are certainly more full of life than our
generic fall back. I am in favor of design 2. It reminds me of a retro
password screen. That's nostalgia right there!

Oh i love the second!

The first is a trifle unclear :(  Its certainly lovely, but the second is awesome-er! :)

In offering additional feedback for the additional designs:

For 1:
It actually makes me think of pointers. It also makes me think of
moving around and making connections. The bright colors also bring a
certain energy to the presentation. However, it doesn't bring an image
of CS into my mind, and I currently associate ACM-W with CS.

For 2:
The background reminds me of a password screen. This in turn reminds
me of low-level programming, cryptology, the cryptic nature of CS for
those looking in from the outside, and character manipulations. This
was the strongest selling point for me for design 2. There's also an
element of elegance to the font used for "ACM-W". My only suggestion
here is to make the font larger or thicker to make the ACM-W logo more
visible.

I just wanted to know if this will be the actual logo for ACM-W?  If yes, then I would just like to add the following comments:

1. I am trying to envision how the designs will look when they are scaled down to an appropriate logo size on a page or website.  I am not sure the letters will be legible.

2. For the 2nd version, note that due it the existing background, the logo if displayed on a web page, will restrict the website's background to only white.  Otherwise, I don't think the characters in the background will show up very well.  You may address the issue by putting a rectangular border around the image (almost like a badge).

3. I think there should be some reconsideration on the color scheme.  I don't have a preference for any color, but a logo is usually designed around 1 or 2 colors due to the expensive price tag at the press (e.g. when you decide to print this on t-shirts, the more colors, the higher the price).

4. Also, any comp should have a black & white version to ensure that it still looks good in without color because that is how it will look for printouts that you won't be spending too much money on, e.g. flyers, etc.

Heidy, thank you for taking the time and effort.  I hope that I did not hurt yours feelings.  Just trying to be helpful.

Since this is an open creative process, Ling has added a couple more
designs. I've uploaded them to the "Files" section of the site as
"acmw_logo.pdf".

Of the new designs, I like the second circle design, but it's hard to
envision it on a rectangular banner (web or outside). It looks like
it would be really good for t-shirts. I also really like Heidy's
second design for banners, especially the letter background. That
background is true CS to the core and a nice throwback to password-
cracking screens. I might suggest making the acm-w font bolder and
one color (garnet?) to make it a little more easily readable, and
adding a smaller "Florida State University" to the bottom to
differentiate our chapter.

Maybe we could use both designs for different purposes?

After the meeting today perhaps we can vote?

I love the designs Ling created (she did a great job on the last set
of icons too!). I think if you went with the chat bubble you should
put a word or emoticon in it (not sure what). For both logos, I would
suggest matching the official color of the ACM-W logo.

I liked the grafiti one from the other submission, but it is a bit
hard to pick out the Acronym and I didn't think computers when I saw
it. Excited to see the updated version of the ASCII logo.

Keep up the good work! This organization and others like it have made
a lasting impact on many lives (including my own) ... and marketing it
is a very important part of getting people excited about your mission!

Oh man, even more designs! When it was just two, I could make a binary
decision and be sure of it. Now there's at least 4 (I'm in favor of
the red variants of Ling's logos over the other colors), so I'm at a
bit of a crossroads.

I must say that I like the clarity of Ling's logos regarding our
message, their simplicity, and how clear they are.

Thank you for your efforts and contributions. It's exciting seeing all
of us working together like this! :)

Hey!
Out of Ling's designs, i really like the blue and red bubbles and someone already mentioned it might be cool to put some writing in them which is what struck me immediately too, when I first saw the bubbles.

Bubbles are too awesome to be empty!

In our undergrad we created class sweatshirts and the slogan printed was  --

/* EVERYTHING ELSE MATTERS */

C++ comments which kind of stole the lyrics of the Metallica track "Nothing else matters" and conveyed that everything outside of the /* */ is what matters.. :)

I dont think we can steal it, but can we think of something similar and more appropriate to being within a bubble?

Shalini

PS: I do like the second one from the earlier two options as much as the bubbles :)

OK, I made some minor changes to the bubble design and put both designs up on a webpage so you can see how the logo will look like when scaled down.

My original draft have them in grey-ish tones.  That's just to show how they will look like when printed out without colors (e.g. when you have them on flyers etc).
