Hi guys, I was brainstorming a few ideas that we might want to
consider to get more people involved with ACM-W. Overall I think there
are a lot of people willing to support women in CS and other computer
related fields but when it comes to doing things, scheduling does
always seems to cause problems.

Here are a few things I thought might be do-able for '10-'11:

1.) Workshop sessions: We could hold short info sessions(1-1.5 hours)
to get people interested in the highlights of computing.

--------> Example workshop topics:
(1) Programming demonstration(aka What We Do(WWD)):
either a few of us or just one could talk about what some CS and other
related majors have made in their various classes and how things they
have made might be used either for industry, government projects, or
various other applications.
(2) Speakers: I know we already have this one planned
but I just am adding it on here.
(3) Tutoral Sessions: what better way to find out if
you like something than to try it? Maybe we could work with securing a
computer lab maybe 2-3 a semester to offer short intro to various
topics in CS and related majors that others might be interested in to
introduce them to each program's work.
-- Building a computer
-- Decomposing a computer(possibly getting
donated old computers to break down for a group and explain the parts?
-- Decomposing an iphone? (we could try to
find some non-working ones to work with?)

2.) Web Emesion
(1) Games: What do we do when we're procrastinating? I
know I like to play online games, maybe we could create a simple cs
related game and include it on our site?
(2) Related Articles/News Feed: We could add a section
of the site with updates on current news and ongoing projects in the
computer related fields.
(3) Twitter? I don't think we have a Twitter yet, do we
want to consider having one?

3.) Advertising
(1) Print: Fliers, Posters, Banners, ect: I could create
various fliers for events?
(2) Online Ads: digital versions of the fliers, posters,
ect to share on websites, ect.
(3) T-shirts: I know we mentioned t-shirts at the start
of the semester, I am currently working on some ideas for that
still(sorry for the hold up guys, I've been so behind on things!)

That's all I have for ideas right now, if anyone is interested in any
of these, would like to help, or wants to throw out any other ideas
feel free to email me at keb...@fsu.edu.

Thanks!

These are excellent ideas, Karen. I especially like the idea of having
weekly or bi-weekly workshops which could include tech talks or
programming demonstrations.
The tutorial sessions seem like they could be a bit more complicated
to organize but we could definitely explore that option.
In response to the related articles/news feed, we once talked about
having a monthly newsletter with ACM. That fell by the wayside and I
can only assume that as the semester progressed, no one found
themselves wanting to be in charge of updating the information on top
of all their other school work. However, a much smaller version of the
newsletter could be very doable!
I've been putting off the ordering of T-shirts until we have more
members. To get more, however, we need to do more!

So, I was thinking it would be fun to have a social event where people
can come together just to get to know each other, hang out, etc. What
do you guys think?
Some ideas:
- A few of us once spent an evening in the ceramic's studio doing
"Paint-a-Pot" and although there weren't many of us, I thought it was
a pretty good time.
- In the past, we've done meetings/gatherings at restaurants like Po'
Boys.
- What about cosmic bowling? I went recently with some friends and it
was much more awesome than I expected.

I would like to schedule something like this, but I need feedback!! I
want to make sure that the event is something people will actually
want to go to :) So please respond with your two cents! Thanks guys.

Thanks, I know it can be rough coming up with ideas for events for
both current members in CS and ones who might be interested in it.

Yeah the only thing with the tech talks would be who and what to
present but I'm sure we could improvise and come up with something for
that. I'm not really a CS major(I was but don't have much experience
with it, I'm trying to get into Advertising right now), so I'm not
sure how much I could help with the tech talk topics.

I do have experience with game design, animation, graphic design, web
design(basic), well and a few other things but programming isn't my
strongest and most experienced work. The only related thing that may
be a helpful tech talk would possibly be tips on creating a custom
portfolio website but I'm not sure if most CS majors really use
personal websites for their work, I've met a few computer related
majors who host thier own websites but it really depends on the person
and what type of work they want to do wheither or not it would be
helpful. For example, there is one person in the department of
Scientific Computing who works on modifying the Blender game engine
and is working on adding particles for use with the game engine(right
now particles only work outside of the game engine) who created a full
website of his work that might be great to have as a guest speaker on
professional web development for CS for work with on-going projects,
that is if he and our group would be interested.

It definately would be fun to have a social event but I'm not sure how
many non-CS related people we would find to attend, at least at first.
Although, even if it is just the CS-related people at first, maybe
others will join after awhile. I'd be open for "Paint-a-Pot" or Cosmic
Bowling as long as it doesn't overlap with any other events. This weeks
a little busy for me but normally I'm pretty open. (I'm a member of
the Ad Club and they hold meetings every other Monday at 7 pm and they
normally last about 2 hours. On this Wednesday, here is a general
meeting for people applying to communications majors which I need to
go to that's 6:30-7:30pm.)

I don't have a car, so anywhere away from campus would be hard to get
to unless I could catch a ride from someone else, but I'd be open to
it if I could get a ride and don't have anything else I already signed
up to do. ^_^ If we could meet somewhere near campus like Hiros,
Moes, or someplace closeby that I could go to without a car, it would
be easier but I'm pretty open if we'd like to plan something.

I graduated but would still love to attend a social event and support acm-w if that's fine with all the members! I wouldn't be able to make it between 8:00am and 6:00 pm Monday thru Friday though! But please feel free to not let that bind you!

Thanks,
