I love how cowboys in movies would jump from around floor on to horses.back and take off I could.only imagine what a bucking fit the horse would give if you were to try this or if you landed on the horn.
The two cowboys were off and lashing theirponies to a sharp run in half a minute. Scarcelyhad they disappeared behind a grove of scrubtrees on the wind-swept ridge beyond the storewhen the honk of an automobile horn startled theslow-motioned storekeeper out of his chair.
But the crowd could not laugh. Huddled togetherin the tonneau, it looked as though OldTrouble-Maker would certainly muss them up awhole lot! Jane Ann and her uncle hopped outon the other side and called the others to follow. At that moment, with a whoop and a drummingof hoofs, a calico cow pony came racing along thetrail toward the stalled car. On the back of thisflying pony was a lanky, dust-covered cowboy, swinging a lariat in approved fashion.
At supper Mr. Hicks took the head of the longtable and Jane Ann did the honors at the otherend. There were the Cameron twins, and Madgeand Bob, and Jennie Stone and Mary Cox, besideRuth Fielding herself. It was a merry party and26they sat long over the meal; before they arosefrom the table, indeed, much shuffling and lowvoices and laughter, together with tobacco smoke, announced the presence of some of the cowboysoutside.
The girls from the East gave the Silver Ranchcowboys a nice little concert, and then Jane Annurged Jib Pottoway to come to the piano. Thehalf-breed was on the veranda in the dusk, withthe other fellows, but he needed urging.
Ike and his mate started almost at once in theother direction, and both teams quenched the firein good shape. Behind them other cowboys drewthe halves of the second steer that had been divided, making sure of the quenching of the conflagrationin the main; but there were still spotswhere the fire broke out again, and it was a coupleof hours, and two more fat steers had been sacrificed, before it was safe to leave the fire line tothe watchful care of only half a dozen, or so, ofthe range riders.
Ruth ran down to the corral and saw, on the41bench outside the bunkhouse door, the row ofbuckets in which the boys had their morningplunge. The sleeping arrangements at SilverRanch being rather primitive, Tom and Bob hadelected to join the cowboys in the big bunkhouse, and they had risen as early as the punchers andmade their own toilet in the buckets, too. Thesheet-iron chimney of the chuckhouse kitchen wassmoking, and frying bacon and potatoes flavoredthe keen air for yards around.
Tom and Bob had raced ahead after the cowboys, and Ruth was right behind them. She hadlearned to sit the saddle with ease now, and shewas beginning to learn to swing a rope; Ike was52teaching her. Tom could really fling the lassowith some success; but of course he could not enterinto this mad rush for a single steer.
A twenty dollar gold piece was not to bescorned; and the cowboys were earnest in theirattempt to make that extra twenty over and abovetheir monthly stipend. But Jane Ann Hicksworked for the fun of it, and because she desiredto show her Eastern friends how she excelled inhorsemanship. There were so many other thingswhich her friends knew, in which she was deficient!
The boys staggered under her weight, but managedto put her upright on her feet, while her62pony streaked it off across the plain, very muchfrightened by such a method of dismounting. Itstruck the whole crowd as being uproariouslyfunny; but the good-natured and polite cowboystried to smother their laughter.
The boys gathered in the dusk on the wideporch and listened to the really beautiful musicthat the girls had learned at Briarwood Hall.Ruth was in splendid voice, and her singing wasapplauded warmly by the cowboys.
The cowboys who had dashed out of the couliesaw the possibility of disaster instantly; and they, too, rode in among the bellowing steers. Withso many heavy creatures pressing toward a commoncenter, many would soon be crushed to deathif the formation was not broken up. Each streakof lightning which played athwart the cloudsadded to the fear of the beasts. Several of thepunchers rode close along the edge of the herd, driving in the strays. Now it began to rain, andas the very clouds seemed to open and emptythe water upon the thirsty land, the swish of it,and the moaning of the wind that arose, addedgreatly to the confusion.
The thunder of hoofs in the distance suddenlyrose to a deafening sound. The great herd hadbroken away and were tearing toward the RollingRiver at a pace which nothing could halt. Severalof the cowboys were carried forward on thefore-front of the wave of maddened cattle; but146they all managed to escape before the leadersreached the high bank of the stream.
This heavy going did more than aught else toretard the stampede; but many of the first-comersgot over the shallow river and climbed upon the147plain beyond. All night long the cowboys weregathering up the herd upon the eastern shore ofthe river; those that had crossed must be leftuntil day dawned.
As he rode, dressed in his typical cowboy costume,Jib looked the full-blooded savage he was;but his conversation smacked of the East and ofhis experiences at school. What he said showedthat Uncle Sam does very well by his red wardsat Carlisle.
Meanwhile she bathed and bathed again thefevered face and hands of the unfortunate. Thiswas all that relieved him. He was quiet for someminutes after each of these attentions. The waterin the bucket became warm, like that in the canteen.Ruth thought she could risk going to therivulet for another supply. So she stuck the barrelof the gun into her belt and taking the emptypail set out to find the stream.
After that he fell into a light sleep and Ruth180went about the cabin, trying to set the poor furnitureto rights and removing the debris that hadcollected in the corners. Every few moments shewas at the door, looking out for either enemy orfriend. But no other creature confronted heruntil the sound of pony hoofs delighted her earand Tom Cameron and Jane Ann, with two of thecowboys from the Rolling River outfit, dashed upto the shack.

Sterling Spoon in the past year did not introduce any new concepts or menus, rather focusing on rebuilding and reopening many of its cafes, coffee bars and operations. It opened two new distinct food service operations, one in the clubhouse setting in planned communities, as well as 12 new operations in Florida, Georgia and Kentucky.
Basically, the company has reinvented its business/client model by working on improving and enhancing its sales and business development initiatives to go after new sales and business opportunities. It looks to identify people who need help or find new clients that want to reinvent their food service businesses for the and post-COVID world.
Sterling has been able to regain much of its sales against pre-COVID from a run rate perspective for the year, though overall it was still down, but it sees 2023 trends as looking very promising with eight new contracts signed.
Operationally, the company enhanced its ghost kitchens, increased its commissary purchasing and production and expanded its online platforms for food ordering, pick-up and delivery to supplement declining sales. It also enhanced its catering platform to drive revenues and increase visibility and name recognition, which helped with client acquisition and satisfaction.

Prince has added over a hundred new plant-based protein recipes to its offerings, and that number is growing weekly as the company has been working with Forward Food for sourcing supplies and they have also helped with the recipe database. The goal to offer as many plant based protein selections to the customer base as possible as it has received excellent reviews in its surveys and so plans to continue expanding in this area.
On the operational end, the main focus has been expanding the healthcare dining division and online ordering capabilities. Prince has worked with its point of sale partner to the point where all customers can now order online and schedule a pickup time. Also, catering customers can order online, charge the sale to a department or purchase order, and select a level of service. Custom orders can still be made by phone or email, but most catering has moved to online order, schedule, and payment.
