I want to use SocialVPN to set up a VPN between me and some friends.
How do we exchange certificates to friend each other?
Thanks,
-Adam

You should send them to each other in encrypted email, such as in gpg.

Run SocialVPN and go to the following link

http://127.0.0.1:58888/state.xml

for versions 0.4.x or

http://127.0.0.1:58888/api

for versions 0.3.x

This will provide necessary information such as base64 certificate and Uid, you can email that to each other. Newer version of SocialVPN will have an easier mechanism for certificate exchange where certificates are exchanged over the P2P network and only the fingerprints and p2p addresses are exchanged.

I was under the impression that the certificates were public keys. Do
we need to keep them secret? Or is the use of encryption here just to
prevent them being tampered with in transit?

Encryption is to avoid tampering. You do not need to encrypt, simply PGP
sign the certificate.
