Hey Everyone,
Last night Francesca and I were the only ones who showed up for the meeting. Here are some notes.
7th-Principle Project Francesca's been working on with fellow CEC-er Scott and Board member Russ to figure out how ACG can best use its resources to ‘work for the sustainable development of our community’ including making the donations policy and process more transparent and inclusive. The project is still in its earliest phases, so let them know if you're interested in helping see it through.
We brainstormed about some possible uses for the co-op's donation budget, as well as ideas for improving diversity, access, and education at the ACG. Some ideas we came up with were:
- co-op managed community garden that would provide some of the ACG's produce
- partnership with Jefferson HS to make use of their full, industrial kitchen for educational purposes (healthy cooking, budget meals, using bulk foods, etc.)
- paid internships or other working-owner incentive plans that might help lower-income community members get involved at ACG.
Listening Season 50 conversations to strengthen our web of co-op relationships and lift up themes that may shape the work of the CEC, the Diversity/Equity project, and the Alberta Co-op as a whole going forward. This is not a survey. Rather, the idea here is to help us uncover what the person's "self-interest" is specifically in relationship to the Alberta Co-op and food, while keeping the conversation natural.
Update: A few people on the committee have had conversations with community members already, but we could definitely use more help. If you're interested in participating in this project (either meeting someone on the committee or joining it yourself), let me know.
Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Committee Our main goals are to identify issues related to race, class, gender, and ethnicity within and beyond the Co-op; to raise awareness of these issues throughout our organization; and to identify action steps that will help us move toward a more equitable, inclusive culture that encourages the acceptance and active participation of all community members.
Update:
I presented an idea to improve community access by matching EBT funds on produce purchases. There is some interest among staff, and a produce-team member has volunteered to contact finance and tech people to determine its feasibility.
We are also waiting for updates from a staff committee regarding a recent proposal for an all-staff anti-oppression training
Like any of the ideas you've seen here? Have any of your own? Let us know and maybe we can add them to the agenda for the next meeting, 630-8pm 7/18.
Cheers,
Ashley
