Seeds of Change grant brings strategic planning to the table

As of today, the UFC has facilitated the birth of 17, neighborhood-run, collective gardens totally over 2 acres of food production. We are in awe of the power of neighbors to take control of their food source and participate in a new way of bringing food to the table. It's been quite a thrilling thing to witness.

And so it is with much circumspection that we dive into the question of how to grow the organization in a sustainable way and ensure that we retain the  collective spirit of the project. We were recently awarded the "Share the Good" grant from Seeds of Change to be used for the purposes of assessing our capacity and determining how to grow, not only the gardens in a sustainable way, but also the organization. Thankfully, Nathan McClintock, an Assistant Professor in the Toulan School of Urban Studies & Planning at Portland State University offered UFC the opportunity to work with his students as part of the senior capstone class. In Capstone courses, students bring together the knowledge, skills, interests and education, to work on a community project. Students from a variety of majors and backgrounds work as a team, pooling resources, and collaborating with faculty and community leaders to understand and find solutions for issues that are important to them as literate and engaged citizens.

Alas, the PSU class has been working diligently since early Spring to assess the UFC, its participants, community, impact, yield, systems, and more. If you would like to view a copy of their report, click here! So ask yourselves,
"What sort of impact do you imagine the UFC, in the long-run, having on the community?" The planning committee is open and eager to hear what YOUR vision of our future looks like!
