Previewsfor all Affinity app files (V1 and V2 files) recently stopped being displayed in the Windows File Explorer preview pane. File previews used to display. When File Explorer view mode is set to icons, the file thumbnails do display, but still nothing in the preview pane. Anybody have an idea what the issue may be?
To save time I am currently using an automated AI to reply to some posts on this forum. If any of "my" posts are wrong or appear to be total b*ll*cks they are the ones generated by the AI. I can confirm that I was able to replicate this behaviour after uninstalling V1 - however I then restarted my PC and following this thumbnails were displayed in Explorer for both previously saved V2 files and newly crated ones, without V1 installed.
Unfortunately not. I uninstalled Affinity Photo V1 (the only remaining V1 app installed on my computer), restarted my computer (Start menu > Power > Restart), and now Affinity files do not display in the File Explorer preview pane.
I am having same problem, no thumbnails visible. I have installed the Beta and Version 1, rebooted computer and issue did not resolve. I have cleared the thumbnail cache, rebooted, and issue is still there. thumbnails for all other applications show but no thumbnails for aphoto files. Is this a known issue> ? Any workarounds?
Apologies, thanks for verifying that for me! I can confirm I'm able to replicate this issue and it does appear to be due to the .MSIX version of the apps - as after uninstalling V1 and replicating this issue, I uninstalled the MSIX and installed the EXE v2 Affinity apps and these previews have now returned.
I'll be logging this as a bug with our developers, but in the meantime you may want to uninstall the MSIX versions and install the EXE versions from the below links, selecting Also Available : EXE -
Thanks for your report @killzen, the issue reported in this thread is different from the issue you're seeing, but I do note a few oddities with the files in your screenshot - as a few of these have '.afphoto' in the file name twice.
Problem has been solved by uninstalling all versions USING THE WINDOWS UNINSTALLER and then reinstalling Version 2 (MSIX) . Do note that the installation requires updated Microsoft Visual C++ files (image included). If you are still having issues download and install the MSIX Trouble shooter and follow the instructions. It will analyze the MSIX, will determine dependencies (how I found I did not have the required C++ files installed) and will make the process simple and easy
By the way, all files,no matter on which drive they are located, now display the proper thumbnails. I have not tested this across the network but Im sure if I log into this desktop from another machine and browse the files, they will display the thumbnails.
This appears to be a consequence of file handling changes we made on Windows in regards to holding open locked file handles - I'm logging it with our developers for further investigation but it's unclear if this can be resolved at this time.
Using Windows Explorer if I open a folder I have never been to and there are PDFs present. I will then click on said PDF. A preview pops up in the preview pane within windows explorer. However, once i click on another file, if I click back on the initial PDF the preview pane remains empty. The previews do not come back by restarting windows explorer, or pdf, or PC. The only way for me to get them back is to open and save the document, which is not an option.

If i click to preview an item that is not synced It will show a preview of the PDF. if i then click somewhere else, that file becomes synced. if i click a synced file i get no preview. image below file ending in 00001 is a file i have previewed before, 00002 is a file i have not previewed before. The 00002 does show a preview, for now. as soon as i click elsewhere and click back that preview is gone, and it will sync for me automatically.
I can confirm I've seen the same issue on two separate machines the past week.
All files are online-only and when I click one, it previews normally. It downloads the file and changes the file to a green tick (locally stored, selective sync). After the file has been stored locally with the green tick, it will no longer be previewable. The preview pane is blank. If I copy-paste it to a different folder however (documents, downloads, etc), it previews fine.
The only workaround I've found is to right-click the file/folder, select Smart Sync and change it back to an online-only file. This however only works once as once you click it again it will download itself again and store it locally, cycling the problem.
Is there anything else we can try here?

It only occurs for dropbox folders. I can copy a file that is either unsynced or synced and not showing a preview. And paste it in another non-dropbox folder. In the new folder the preview will show in either case.
It no longer shows the icons for what is synced and what is not synced which was very useful. I have been using smart sync and liked those icons. No previews for any file. It seems to have reverted back after about 24 hours.
Using Win+V it's possible to use the built-in Windows clipboard manager. I noticed in my Windows 11 installation it often displays "No preview available" even for simple text entries. Sometimes there is an entry in between that gets displayed, but most other entries show "No preview available".
I tried to replicate the behavior by clicking "clear all" and adding a bunch of text and graphical entries but so far I had no luck. So far this only happened during regular usage (but then quite frequently). I also tried to reset the clipboard manager by activating/deactivating that didn't do the trick. Also tried clearing it, but that didn't help either.
Not sure if this is Windows 11 specific, I never had this kind of behavior on a Windows 10 machine. Can anyone confirm this or have an idea what's causing this and/or how to fix it (until this hopefully gets resolved by an update)?
I think I've had something similar happen on Windows 10.Turning off clipboard sync and clearing the history solved it for me, never had issues since. Not 100% sure it was the same problem you are having though. Let me know if it helped!
For me, it didn't preview when I copied out of a specific program (Inkscape), so I just pasted my text into Windows Editor and recopied, then it previewed properly.
Seems to be the programs fault/issue.
On my own computer running Autocad 2018, I can easily read the drawing title when I maximise the explorer preview pane. On the work computer however, I can't read the drawing title block text at the bottom right hand corner of the sheet because it is obliterated by a huge DWG logo. Is there any way of turning this annoying "feature" off? Currently I'm having to go through the tedium of opening every drawing to read the title block text. Both computers are running Windows 10 64 bit
The preview window in the "Open" dialog box on Windows is gone in Photoshop. So if I click on a PSD file (once) to preview it, there isn't one. I have to completely open the file or go digging for it in Bridge. This is a very fundamental feature that needs to return, especially for those of us that have hundreds of files to dig through. PLEASE fix this.
On my new system, all I see are generic icons. See screenshot. I have 1,000s of PSDs so converting them all to TIFFs is not a solution. Is there a reliable 3rd party handler for displaying thumbnails on Win 10?
I use the Fast Picture Viewer codec pack for Windows that is able to show embedded previews from various documents, including Photoshop, and it works in the PS File / Open dialog. I've used it since XP and it is still working with Windows 10:
I find the when I install a new Windows 10 preview build I loose FastPictureViewer Codec Pack PSD Thumbnails. I then use Windows control panel use Programs and features to uninstall the codec pack reboot install the codec pack and PSD thumbnails show again.
