Theauthor says that The Harbinger is a loosely fictional novel, rooted in biblical analysis regarding a real-life, non-fiction connection: a prophecy about ancient Israel that was eventually fulfilled in the eighth century BC when Israel was destroyed, and certain corresponding events and facts related to the 9/11 terror attacks against the U.S. in 2001 that show parallels to those events. Cahn calls these events and facts "harbingers," and argues that they show a connection between ancient Israel's destruction and a possible coming destruction of the present-day United States. He also says that ancient Israel received a warning before being destroyed, and that the 9/11 harbingers form a similar warning from God to America.[5]

The author argues that America was founded similar to ancient Israel and the Founding Fathers envisioned a country based on the rules of God and a Light Unto the Nations. The author lists a series of warnings or harbingers that were given to ancient Israel before its final destruction by the Assyrians and makes a parallel between each and the events of 9/11.

American television and radio host Glenn Beck called it "an incredible story", saying that the author's use of novel format was at present the only way to have a serious conversation about God for modern Americans.[14]

American radio host and Denver, Colorado Pastor Bob Enyart interviewed Jonathan Cahn about his book, The Harbinger. And while Enyart was appreciative of Cahn's efforts to warn America about its rebellion against God, Enyart explained to Cahn, that what Cahn predicted was not a harbinger of things to come and advises pastors against making such outlandish claims that hurt the testimony of Christians as they seek to call the nation to repentance.[15]

The prophet produces the seals of each of the Nine Harbingers, revealing their meanings to Nouriel and showing how the harbingers that manifested as a warning to ancient Israel have now appeared in America since the attacks on 9/11/01. All of these connect to show that America will fall and has already begun to fall as a result of their failure to follow God's ways as prophesied in Isaiah 9:10; the nation's only hope to avert judgment is to repent and return to God's ways.

The prophet teaches Nouriel about how 9/11 is related to America's financial collapse of September 2008, just as ancient Israel suffered financial crises as part of their warnings. Nouriel also learns how this is all related to the Shemitah, the seventh year designed for rest, and he finds that America's crises began on Shemitah with the attacks at Ground Zero just as the financial collapse occurred on Shemitah. The prophet teaches Nouriel about the three witnesses and how their proclaimed vow to rebuild after the breach demonstrates their defiance according to the ancient prophecy, while simultaneously foreshadowing their fall.

Nouriel also learns that the attacks of 9/11 took place on the same ground where America was consecrated and dedicated to God, another aspect adhering to the prophecy. The prophet urges Nouriel to repent, and Nouriel turns his life over to God, accepting his role as the scribe sent to warn America of the danger it faces, and this is why he contacts Ana. Through Nouriel's narrative, Ana's skepticism transitions into belief, and she agrees that it is important for Nouriel to share his message with the entire nation. After warning Nouriel that he will be despised for his message, the prophet reminds him that this outcome is better than having the nation's destruction on his hands, so he urges Nouriel to sound God's alarm.

The whole mission for Baltazar is to seek refuge in the House of Darian, a sanctuary for Descendants of Orijin, the creator, and learn about their powers. However the headmaster, Zin Marlowe, is making the descendants a pacifistic culture, something the rest of the descendants do not approve of since one of the harbingers, Jamash, is returning after a long period of isolation and no one feels confident to fight back unless they use their powers.

The mythology is straight out of biblical teachings. Three chosen disciples of Orijin and Five others watched over the world, but one of them, Jamash, the main villain, betrayed everyone else. Darian flooded the world and created the drowned realm of Ashur. The book explains the mythology better than I can, but the mythology is hugely important and not a backdrop like in most works.

In The Harbinger II, Jonathan Cahn draws parallels between modern-day America and ancient Israel, highlighting nine specific harbingers or omens that warn of divine judgment. Cahn suggests America has gradually abandoned its spiritual foundations, fueling cultural decline similar to Israel prior to its downfall.

Cahn argues persuasively that the founding of the United States, akin to that of ancient Israel, had sacred purposes, which included establishing a model of moral uprightness and acting as a beacon of righteousness for the world. He emphasizes the viewpoint of America's early Puritan settlers, particularly highlighting that they believed the nation's success was dependent on its commitment to a sacred agreement. He compares the modern focus on amassing riches and indulging in enjoyment to the hedonistic society that existed in ancient Israel prior to its downfall.

Cahn proposes that the hardships America is facing today, including the economic slump and the COVID-19 pandemic, might be interpreted as potential indications of divine punishment, similar to the adversities encountered by Israel in antiquity. He argues that these disruptions are a wider heavenly warning, urging a country to pursue alignment with the Divine.
