It is always pleasing to see a fresh team deliver a product that is new in its output even though its ingredients are an age old formula. What happens when a good-for-nothing 12th standard lad (though he has been at it for many years) tumbles over a rich, beautiful, well educated fashion technology lass? Well, we have seen enough of this, please give us a break. But I insist that you take the extra pain to spend your 2.5 hours on this movie as it has something different to offer.
Set in the backdrop of North Chennai, you come across real life characters, be it the relationship between Ramesh and his mother, the strong presence of local rowdies featuring Prasanna, a witty Karunas dealing with his father, you have it all in the plot. The screenplay is racy enough to keep you engrossed even if there are fading moments. All these characters have something in common, they intersect between each other as it is a normal affair and all of this culminates in a climax that, having said all of the above, leaves it to fate. You are left despondent and curse the director for his akward thought, but hey, we do not control the outcome of fate. Spare a thought and ponder over the climax, and you agree with the director hands down!
Atharva looks good and comfortable with chennai tamizh and gives a performance that looks like a seasoned actor. Samantha gives you the impression that she is the next big thing in Kollywood. She not only looks good but also delivers with her acting. Prasnna as Ravi, in a surprise but superlative performance is likeable. The pick of the lot is Karunas who not only gets to hang around with the hero, but also gets a separate comedy track and delivers some rip roaring laughter moments. This baana kaathadi flies high!
