Whether you've just reached a new milestone in a game or need to save an essential document, taking a screenshot on your Galaxy phone or tablet is a straightforward process. The exact method may vary slightly depending on your device's model, but the functionality is designed to be convenient for capturing images on your device.
Note: Please note that available screens, settings, and the screenshot function's availability in Secure Folder may differ by wireless service provider, software version, and phone or tablet model.
For all Galaxy devices, taking a screenshot typically involves the Power and Volume Down buttons. These buttons are generally found on the left side (Volume) and the right side (Power or Side button), although their placement can vary. To capture a screenshot, simultaneously press and release both buttons. The screen's flash indicates a successful capture. On devices with a physical Home button, press the Power and Home buttons together instead.
This gesture-based method allows you to capture a screenshot by swiping the edge of your hand across the screen. It's not supported on all devices, such as the Galaxy Tab S6 Lite due to hardware limitations. To enable it, go to Settings, search for Palm swipe to capture, and toggle it on.
Utilize Bixby Voice or Google Assistant for hands-free screenshots. Command "Hey Bixby, take a screenshot" for Bixby or "Hey Google, take a screenshot" for Google Assistant. Bixby also supports chained commands like capturing and sharing to Twitter directly.
Devices compatible with an S Pen allow screenshots through Screen write. Remove the S Pen, navigate to the desired screen, tap the Air command menu icon, and select Screen write. The screenshot can then be edited before saving.
The most common way to take a screenshot on a Galaxy phone or tablet is by pressing the power and volume down keys at the same time. However, where these buttons are found and the method for taking a screenshot will differ depending on the settings you have enabled and the device you are using. See the images below to determine which buttons are on your device. Continue to find out how to take a screenshot on your device.
Once you have taken the screenshot, it will be automatically saved in the Screenshots album in the Gallery app. You can then move the screenshot from this album to any other album on your phone or tablet.
Please note: Taking a screenshot is prevented in certain places on your devices and by certain apps, such as banking apps. You will receive a message saying 'Can't take screenshot due to security measure' if screenshots are not allowed. This is a security measure and is designed to protect your information.
If your device has a Bixby button your power and volume keys are located in different places. Press and hold the power key and the volume down key simultaneously. The screen will flash and your screenshot will be saved. If this does not work try a brief tap rather than a hold of the power and volume down buttons.

With the Record Screen feature on smartphones running One UI 2 or later, you can also capture funny memes, your epic gameplay, reaction videos, or show a loved one how to do something on your phone.
There is now a "Take screenshot" button in the pulldown menus of both my A03s and A54 phones. Unfortunately it is not among the buttons that come installed by default. To get this button onto your pulldown menu:
3. This then opens a two-section screen. On the top are your existing buttons, which you have the option of removing or dragging around. On the bottom is a palette of "Available buttons", among which you should find "Take screenshot".
I know nothing about the history of the "Take screenshot" button because I just started using Samsung phones in October 2023. I'm guessing it wasn't available previously, since I've never seen anyone but me discuss it. Even the YouTubers explaining how to take Samsung screenshots don't mention it.
I find it extremely strange that Samsung would have failed to provide this button as a high-priority item that comes installed in its pulldown menus by default. My old LG phones had "Screen Shot" in their top pulldown menus. I don't use screen shots often, but when I need one I really need one (for example to capture an image of a ticket I've bought). I've spent a lot of time trying to figure out some reasonable way of getting a screen shot other than carefully momentarily holding down the "power" and "volume down" buttons or using a swiping gesture that might cause problems in the app whose screen I am capturing.
Even stranger are Samsung's choices of buttons that ARE installed by default. For example, in place of the "Take screenshot": on first page of the deeper pull-down (on my two A54s) is the pre-installed "Screen Recorder", which takes movies of my screen activities. I cannot imagine who, other than a YouTuber making instructional videos, would use this. But there it is, right on the first page of the deep-level pulldown.
It took me ten weeks to figure out that I can edit the pulldown menus, and that hidden away among the non-installed items is "Take screenshot". It is uninstalled by default despite there being plenty of space on the second page of the deep pull-down. Who at Samsung decided that people don't need to take screen shots any more, and that people would instead want to take movies of their screen activities? It's inconceivable to me. Anyway, I finally solved my problem, and I hope it solves yours.
I was able to get the scrolling screenshot to work by going to Settings > Apps > Samsung capture > Three dots in the upper right > Uninstall Updates. Also just in case, I cleared the app data by going to Settings > Apps > Samsung capture > Storage > Clear data.
It's likely an issue with the latest version of Samsung capture.
I will not be updating my Samsung capture app in the Galaxy store until the scrolling screenshot feature and the screenshot toolbar is fixed.
When you create the screenshot on the bottom part of the screen there's like a menu bar that will pop up for just a few seconds. The first icon with the arrows going down is what you hit to screenshot multiple pages. You have to be quick about it though before that menu disappears after screenshot
That fixed it! Deinstalled Samsung Capture updates. Didn't work until I cleared the cache and data too. Then all good. I figured it was an issue with capture, but didn't know where to go to tweak it.
Also, for the earlier comment posted, you can (but don't need to) hold down on the down chevron... you will notice it changes color each time it saves off a chunk of the screen, then prompts you if you want the next chunk by presenting the white (versus greyed out) down chevron again.
Ok, After rolling back to capture 4.9.41 and clearing cashe, I reinstalled the latest Samsung Capture 4.9.50.2 and am happy to report long capture is still working. Noticed 50.2 came out a few days ago. That may have fixed the root cause.
I got my S23+ this month and all was well. All of a sudden now I cannot save screenshots to a screenshot folder. It keeps going to Internal storage/DCIM/Pictures. I have altered the pathway several times by going to Advanced Features and even selecting an established album. I am so frustrated that this might be what makes me break up with Samsung. Can someone please help me?
Man thanks for your reply. I actually saw it this morning. It was the weirdest thing because it definitely wasn't there last night. I kept checking the file path and everything. And thanks for being the voice of reason, me and Samsung are ok for now haha.
Hey, thanks for being helpful! I did check that and it was up to date. But I'm all good now. The album was showing all the way at the bottom of my gallery. IDK what changed between then and now, but It definitely wasn't there when I checked last night.
It's surprising how often you need to take a screenshot on your phone. Whether it's to capture a social media post, the winning screen in a game, or a funny meme, knowing how to take screenshots is vital.
2. Press the Volume Down and Power buttons simultaneously, and hold them for a second until the screenshot is taken. You'll see the screen flash and shrink slightly.
3. The screenshot toolstrip will appear at the bottom of the screen for a few seconds. You can use the tools here to edit the image, but if you just wait a few moments, the screenshot will slide off-screen and be saved to the Gallery.
Normally when you take a screenshot, it'll only capture what you can currently see on the screen. This is usually fine, but won't work if you're trying to screenshot an entire webpage, or a long post.
