My wireless Brother printer has been working wonderfully for several years with my Ubuntu setup, now for some reason, perhaps an OS update, it no longer functions. When I command a print mostly what I get is "processing" which can go on for hours. I have tried downloading the files and linux installer from Brother's website, and I have tried every variation of URI that Brother offered. I have installed a generic printer (CUPS) but it also does not work for me. I have reviewed every question/answer on AU (except the correct one.) What am I missing? Is solving the problem more of a waste of time than replacing the printer with an Ubuntu-compatible machine, that is, is there a printer that is sort-of-guaranteed to work out of the box with Ubuntu? Is my current printer trying its best but is it just not up to the job? Of course, I would be happier to keep on working with my current machine that having to replace it.

Holy smokes! After nearly a day of tweaking this and that, I decided to go back to scratch. I unplugged the printer, deleted it from my list of printers, plugged in again the printer and waited. Ubuntu's printer list soon populated with my printer, I cancelled its search for drivers, since it is driverless, printed a test page and voila! It works. I tried a couple of other docs (pdf, inter-active pdf) and it is working like it just came back from spring break.

Run the following command to install the drivers from the default Ubuntu multiverse repository. The repository should be enabled by default but just in case, go ahead and enable the repo and then install the packages using the following commands.

Hello! I recently bought a Brother laser printer for printing my product labels at home. When I print to it from the web, or other programs it looks great. I know it's not a screen calibration issue, because the colors are true from all other sources. It doesn't matter if I save as pdf, print from Brother app, print from InDesign/Illustrator; the colors are always off. Pinks, green, and yellows are the worst. Since I know it's not a printer or screen issue, I am positive it is some setting in Adobe. I've read lots of articles, clicked lots of settings, now I'm just frustrated and nowhere closer to having a good print. I've tried: changing destination, CYMK, keep numbers from source, and a variety of others. Anyone have any advice. I know there has to be a way!

It probably is Adobe. At least part of it. In that the default color settings in Adobe programs are calibrated to get good color reproduction from relatively high-end sheetfed color printing and not tailored for your Brother laser printer. Think of them like super printer drivers tailored to match Adobe print functions with your Brother color laser printer to get the best results.

After this, I'd check Brother's website to find the appropriate profile for your specific printer and install it. Apply that profile in your Adobe color settings and you should get much better results.

Thank you so much! I figured there had to be some sort of issue like this. I know not to expect print shop quality from my Brother, but I know it is able to output better color than what I an getting. I will check the above links and give an update. Thank you again!

@tommyeh90129194 It sounds like an incorrect color profile is somehow being applied when you print from an InDesign-generated file or document. The Brother laser is CMYK, right? There is another long thread (link below) that addresses settings in Photoshop that may (or may not!) be helpful. I realize you've already tried so many things. Is the content on the color labels you are printing text or image based? Are there large or dense blocks of color applied to the design? Any screenshots you can share that might give us some more clues? Hopefully, someone will show up here who has a simple answer for you!

I will attach screen shots later, thank you for the suggestion. Right now I was just trying 1.51.5 blocks to make sure my color palette would come out the way I wanted. My printer is CYMK. After reading an article about assigning profiles, I changed the settings. However, I later read that these printers are straight are actually coded to accept RGB files. I changed the files back, and that helped somewhat.

What is the printer model exactly? You do say that it is CMYK, and that will certainly be true of the ink. But most CMYK printers must be sent RGB data, and so you will get weird results if you try to use CMYK with them.

Installing the printer driver correctly: Do not connect the printer to the computer. Start installing the software first. During the installation process, a message will appear on the monitor informing you when to connect the printer to your computer.

Double-click the downloaded .exe file. It will be decompressed and the Setup screen will be displayed. Follow the instructions to install the software and perform the necessary settings.Select a language and proceed with the software installation.

To use any computer device, software (driver) is required. It is recommended to use the original software included with the device. If you don't have the software and can't find it on the device manufacturer's website, we can help. Tell us the model of your printer, scanner, monitor or other computer device, as well as the operating system version (for example: Windows 11, Windows 10, Windows 8, etc.).

How to find out what version of the operating system is installed on your Mac device. From the Apple menu in the top left corner of your screen, select About This Mac. You should see the macOS name, such as macOS Sonoma, followed by the version number. If you need to know the build number as well, click the version number to see it.

The website provides information on the use of computers and software. Also on the site you can find answers to complex questions that arise when using printers, scanners, monitors, laptops and other computer devices.
