I have tried everything I can think of, I've had two friends who deal with IT problems look at my computer via shared screen with no luck. Since updating to Windows 11 I never noticed Windows Security would not open until recently, it's active and running in the background in Task Manager. I've tried the Powershell and CMD hotfixes, I've reset my PC locally and cloud but I have no restore or recovery points prior to the Windows 11 update. My PC is up to date on all firmware from Microsoft but Windows Security still will not open. Windows Security nor Windows Defender is not listed under my "Installed Apps" or "Default Apps" so I can't try a drop down repair on it. It does show within my Task Manager that there is Windows Defender engine running and in the hidden icons tab it shows Windows Security active. How do you fix this without having to lug your whole PC to a shop?

Repair Windows Security using DISM: Open Command Prompt as administrator and run the following commands: DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /StartComponentCleanup

@ShahbazUbaid my windows license is already expired. and i am not getting any security updates ever since. and that is also the time where i noticed that my windows security app won't open. is it because of my windows license bein expired? do you think if i reactivate my license, it will solve my problem?

@TayDean It's early 2024 and I am in the same boat since the most recent update. In all their wisdom, Microsoft has removed Troubleshooter with this update and wants me to contact tech support. The last time I did that, I was 77 people away from help. I do not have that kind of time.

I've tried all the suggestions here except reinstalling Windows, which is a major hassle and would require hunting down the software I use for work and reinstalling it too. I had to do this once last week because a previous update crashed my computer. It created all manner of work-related issues.

This is really dumb and Microsoft should have fixed this already. But I'm open to more suggestions.

@ShahbazUbaid I appreciate the suggestion, but it didn't work. I'd actually tried it already along with a host of other suggestions found in other places, but thought I'd missed something. I did not.

I'm fairly sure I'm going to have to reinstall Windows again to fix this. It will have to wait until the weekend as I work full-time from home and this has eaten up far too much of my time as it is.

Exceedingly frustrating.

The simplest solution I've found to this problem involves changing the exact way you tell Alteryx to connect to the file. When I would try to paste the path of the file into the Input Data tool in the Connect a File or Database box, I would get this error.

After you release it to that space, you should see the Data connections disappear and the Select Excel Input window appear. If it does, you're good to go. Somehow Alteryx Designer doesn't like the path paste method, but luckily there was an easy workaround for me. Hope it works for you too!

My IT dept installed some patches over the weekend, and lo and behold, my workflow that imports XLS files is completely broken now. I used to get that warning around the 'list of sheet names' option, but now my access to XLS files is 100% blocked.

With my current project, my goal for the short-to-mid term is to host an app on the gallery, an end user will run it, select the data needed, and it will update a database. Unfortunately that doesn't seem very future-proof since our network monitoring tool only spits out .xls files. Then IT will install another security patch and you can see where I'm going...

If you install the driver in my link this should fix the issue. IT will be able to install it. When they patch the server that shouldn't reverse the installation of the driver, so should only be a one off task for your IT that then no longer impacts xls when the server has future patches. - I appreciate I am a little late in replying though!

The common perception is that paid security products from third parties must be more effective than any security built into an operating system like Windows. That may have been true in the past. But over the years, Microsoft has beefed up the security features that come with Windows. Beyond just basic antivirus protection, Windows 10 and 11 both include a healthy lineup of other tools designed to protect your PC, your files, and your online activity from malicious threats.

By default, any malicious items are automatically quarantined. Microsoft Security keeps track of all threats via its Protection history. Here, you can view new, quarantined, and cleaned items and also see recommendations on settings you may want to enable or configure to enhance your security.

Also part of Microsoft Security is ransomware protection. This protects certain files, folders, and areas of memory from unauthorized access and changes by malicious or suspicious apps. You can view the folders that are automatically protected this way and add additional folders you want secured. To help with data recovery in the event of a successful ransomware attack, Microsoft steers you to its own OneDrive backup and syncing service with a specific option for recovering any compromised files.

Beyond Microsoft Defender, Windows Security ties in with other aspects of the operating system. Under Account protection are links to view your Microsoft account, set up Windows Hello authentication for fingerprint or facial recognition, and enable Dynamic Lock to automatically lock your PC when you leave with your smartphone in hand.

The overall Windows Security dashboard is well designed, offering access to each of the different features. In Windows 10, go to Settings > Update & security, and then Windows Security. In Windows 11, go to Settings > Privacy & security, and then Windows Security. From there, either click the button for Open Windows Security to view and access the different tools, or click a specific tool to view or use it.

In Microsoft Edge, clicking each of the test files triggered a warning from SmartScreen that the site was unsafe. The eicar.com, eicar.com.txt file, and the eicar_com.zip file were all prevented from being downloaded as Defender labeled them unsafe. And the eicarcom2.zip file was blocked with a notice that a virus was detected.

In Chrome, I was stopped from trying to save each of the four files because a virus was detected. In Firefox, I was able to save each of the files. But when I tried to run or open them, Microsoft Defender prevented the action, telling me that it found a virus or potentially unwanted software.

An AV-Test review from November/December of 2022 gave Microsoft Defender grades of 6 out of 6 for protection and usability, and 5 out of 6 for performance. Testing from AV Comparatives in from September and October of 2022 awarded the program generally good grades but knocked it down a few points for too many false positives and a low offline detection rate. A December 2022 analysis from SE Labs gave Microsoft Defender top grades for protection and accuracy.
