Grapheme-phoneme correspondences and tricky words are taught in a progressive sequence, the progression of which is reinforced by the decodable reading material. At Leechpool Primary School, we do not follow a set scheme, but have taken elements from multiple reading schemes such as Collins Big Cat and Oxford Reading Tree to offer a broad range of books. Our 12 book band colours follow in this order: lilac, pink, silver, red, yellow, blue, green, orange, turquoise, purple, gold, white and these reading books are carefully matched to children's phonics knowledge.

Song of Sounds is also a multi-sensory phonics programme. It is hands on and interactive with music, movement, and practical activities at its core, to ensure children enjoy the phonics learning process. The programme ensures that children become fluent readers and knowledgeable spellers by the end of Key Stage 1.

I like to find a variety of ways to extend work with sandpaper letters and phonetic objects. One fun and memorable way is through phonics songs. There are some fun letter sound songs available that create variety and also help children enjoy phonics.

Singing helps kids learn vocabulary, listening skills, letter sounds, letter recognition, and so much more. When you add in some dance and hand movements, a motor skills connection is formed. When this connection happens, the information in these catchy tunes stays locked in the memory of your little learners, simply by dancing and singing together!

Another appeal of songs as learning tools is that they appeal to the various learning styles of your kindergarten students. Songs have the magical ability to reach every learner. Research also tells us that they are amazingly effective tools for cultural education and language learning, too.

The data from learning from songs also shows that they help kids develop a love of learning at an early age. Songs are also highly effective in helping with vocabulary retention in young learners. Singing educational songs with your class is one of the best things you can do to motivate your reluctant learners, too. After all, who can resist a catchy beat!? Not me!

The Better Alphabet song is a great one to have your students practice while you are paying close attention to the mouth positions. Often times you will find that students (and adults) need to unlearn some previous mispronunciations. This is the alphabet song that will help. Add it to your playlist and hit REPEAT!

My teaching career allowed me to experience teaching in different classroom environments and grades. My heart belongs to early childhood education. My job is to make teaching FUN, ENGAGING, and EASIER. Welcome!
