For Residents (Portuguese Citizens or Foreign Nationals with Portuguese Residency):

1. In Person:

   • Visit a local tax office ("Serviço de Finanças") in Portugal.
   • Bring your identification documents (passport or Portuguese Citizen Card), proof of address (utility bill or rental contract), and any other relevant documentation that may be required.

2. Online (Portal das Finanças):

   • If you have a Portuguese Citizen Card or a Digital Mobile Key (Chave Móvel Digital), https://nifportugal.net/nif-online you can apply for an NIF online through the Portal das Finanças (Tax Authority's Portal).
   • Visit the Portal das Finanças website  and navigate to the section for "Cidadãos" (Citizens) to find the relevant forms and instructions.

For Non-Residents (Foreign Nationals without Portuguese Residency):

1. Through a Representative:

   • If you are unable to apply in person, you can appoint a legal representative in Portugal to apply for an NIF on your behalf.
   • Your representative will need to provide the necessary documentation, including a Power of Attorney authorizing them to act on your behalf.

2. Online (Portal das Finanças):

   • Non-residents can also apply for an NIF online through the Portal das Finanças.
   • You will need to follow similar steps as residents, providing identification documents and any other required information.
