Servant of the blind and the poorest, Senator Monthian Buntan whose slogan is "I've Given Up On Giving Up." Passed away on 2 March 2024 at the age of 58. He strongly and tirelessly worked for the betterment of the blind until his very last day. We, Thai blind people, honor and will cherish his legacy.
Senator Monthian was one of the faculty members during the early days of Ratchasuda College (now is Ratchasuda Institute), Mahidol University. He was one of the leaders in disability movement who represented Thailand during the draft of the Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (CRPD). He was the first person with disability from Thailand and the ASEAN to later serve as the committee member of the CRPD. Many Thai laws and policies which harmonize with the CRPD were also because of his tireless work. In the blind community, he was the honourary life member of the World Blind Union (WBU). He was the the 12th President of the Thailand Association of the Blind.
Apart from his dedication to disability movement, Senator Monthian had a gift in music and singing. Besides, he had a great passion for braille and technology. He saw these as the gateway to literacy and a good quality of life of the blind.
