World Blind Union Celebrates International White Cane Safety Day: The Universal Symbol of Independence

On Sunday, October 15, 2023, the World Blind Union (WBU) will once again celebrate International White Cane Safety Day, alongside millions of blind and partially sighted individuals across the globe. This year, amidst ongoing global challenges such as the war
against Ukraine, climate change-induced natural disasters, and the lingering effects of the COVID-19 pandemic, the WBU emphasizes the white cane as a universal symbol of hope, independence, and resilience.
"The white cane is more than just a mobility tool; it is a symbol of independence, allowing blind and partially sighted individuals to navigate the world confidently, from their local neighborhoods to international adventures," says Martine Abel-Williamson,
President of the World Blind Union.
Diana Stentoft, Secretary General of the World Blind Union, who is partially sighted, shares, "The white cane is not only beneficial for those who use it to detect and avoid obstacles but is also a powerful signifier for individuals with low vision like myself.
It instills a sense of confidence and independence, affirming that we, too, can navigate the world with assurance."

the public about the white cane, its significance, and the essential rights of the blind and partially sighted community.
This year, the WBU continues to champion the rights and independence of blind and partially sighted individuals, emphasizing the need for continued education about the white cane and advocating for accessible resources and training to ensure everyone who can
benefit from a white cane has access to this powerful tool.
