Sorry, I'm new to the community, so apologies if this has been posted elsewhere, but looking to upgrade from my current unlimited broadband (without phone) package, and it seems that the only options that are available to me all require me to take line rental.
The whole purpose of my having the package which I currently do (& for which the contract has expired) was that I didn't have to change my phone line from BT (which is in my partner's name anyway). Are there no longer any available packages that DON'T require you to take a Plusnet line rental?
As long as you have a landline and you're happy to stay with BT for that then you can order PlusNet on your BT landline. That's we do. Though our PlusNet account is old and our BT landline is even older - we've had the same landline number since we moved there in 1979!
As some readers will know, as an existing customer I went over to FTTP and cancelled my phone line (going over to VoIP) following which they hiked up my internet charge by a couple of quid in order to part compensate for their loss.
3. It is now cheap to use mobiles for both calls and internet. For under a tenner a month you can get as much internet and calls as many individuals need, unless streaming hours of entertainment. 6 mobile with data v. 8 PN Anytime landline calls is one example.
I haven't paid for an overseas call in years. Last time I looked at Plusnets charges for the country I was interested in, I did a double take and then wondered who on earth would pay their charges e.g. over a 1 a minute. For instance, those same calls using my mobile telco would come in at a max charge of 8p a minute (no set up charges etc).
I pay a small nominal amount to company to host my original phone number and that really is just about it. Several family members living overseas yet my charges for calls last year were less than a fiver.
Unfortunately if there's no option to upgrade to fibre online via your account without moving your phone service to us, there'd likely be no option for us too as the product change tool you'd use and we'd use is based off the same system.
With regards to your bill, have you viewed a breakdown from Here? (I'd normally check it myself but I'm not in the office at the moment, we'll pick this up either over the weekend or early next week if you still need help with that).
As there's been some talk about FTTP, bar a handful of people we've got on our legacy FTTP trial, all of our current products require line rental so you'd need this one way or another, and having broadband and line rental with one provider generally means it's cheaper as it's a bundled dual play product. It also makes fault finding (if you do ever experience a fault) so much easier, because if a line test detects a fault on the line even though your phone may be working perfectly fine, we'd need to pass you back to your phone provider to investigate the line, because we can't raise a broadband fault if a line tests as faulty.
@TeeGee Going a bit off topic here but our advertised prices do show broadband and line rental together although we itemise it so you know what you're buying, because there are still a lot of people who use their landline phone service. Phone calls are included in a monthly fee if you choose to take up a call plan. Granted there are some number ranges we don't offer in a call plan, but they're generally premium rate numbers.
I'm sorry to see you're thinking of leaving. If we can't offer you a fibre broadband only package, have you considered moving your phone service to us (with your partner's permission of course if they're the account holder with BT)?
I have just received an Amazon Echo as a present, and wanted to use it to play music, but I don't want to pay a tenner a month to Amazon or Spotify, so I found a "skill" that allows me to use my desktop as a music server. Leading on from that, I want to be able to wake my desktop from sleep modefrom my phone or laptop.
Thanks for the response. Mine looks quite different, and from the sites I've looked at, is the norm. Under "Power Management" there are three options. The only other setting, as far as I know, is under Advanced, and that is the "Wake on Magic Packet" one.
Fair point, but in order to tick the second two boxes in that setting, you have to tick the top one. In other words, in order to tick the box that allows the network card to wake the computer, you have to first tick the box that allows the computer to turn off the network card.
I've had to do this and untick this a few times for machines at work where they're static machines but kept on wifi. Like people have mentioned above just make sure the power settings are set accordingly so the device doesn't have any power saving options on the wireless.
I've Googled this, and there are conflicting messages. Some say that it is possible to wake over wireless LAN, and some say it isn't. I can understand that, if the computer is off (no power), then it can't receive a signal, but in sleep or hibernation mode, power is kept to maintain some function, so, in theory keeping power to the wifi adapter should enable it to receive a signal and respond to a wake up nudge.
I think it's the difference between wake on LAN (WoL) and wake on wireless LAN (WoWLAN). I think WoWLAN is now possible, but my desktop is 5 years old (I know antique ), so it may not work for me. I have tried to update the wifi adapter drivers, and it says that I have the most up to date drivers installed.
Hi there,
I just wanted to kindly get some advice from you guys if that's ok as I'm not sure what to do here, I don't want to leave Plusnet as they've been fantastic but a few disappointments during contract renewal have come around.
The first being fixed price contract no longer a thing, the only reason this concerns me is because I had trouble with a previous ISP constantly putting up bills (at one point an extra tenner a month) where I had to go through CISAS to get it sorted and eventually get myself to Plusnet. The fixed price broadband was great for me due to above yet it's no longer a thing for some reason, it really made me feel happy knowing they wouldn't slyly put up bills (I don't expect Plusnet to do this but my previous ISP were a nightmare). I won the CISAS of course and got an apology but this really was one of the things with Plusnet I felt really good about.
Secondly, I can only renew a 24 month contract but the reason this has made me unsure is because as many of us are aware we are on the old FTTC infrastructure (Fibre optic wires from the exchange to the cabinet then old copper wiring to our homes) where we probably should have had FTTP (fibre optic wires direct from the exchange to our homes) a long time ago. We are currently playing catch up in the UK as of last year we were 81st behind due to not upgrading the infrastructure however a couple of weeks ago they started working on this in my area where our broadband went off for a couple of hours while they did the upgrade and the FTTP checker now says "We're starting to build our ultra fast, ultra reliable broadband in your area" (a street a few minutes away is completed) though I've been told if I renew my contract I can't upgrade to the new infrastructure until my contract is finished.
Plusnet are eventually having FTTP available but I find this a little unfair when this is a progression of broadband which is needed as we advance to be stuck on this until my contract expires, it reminds me of being on dial up when broadband was being upgraded to a degree.
So I was wondering what you guys thought? I've been with Plusnet a while and even got a lot of people with them due to how great they are and I'm also on Plusnet mobile which I got a few people on too, however it seems we're going to be lagging behind and stuck in long term contracts soon which has kinda made me wonder what to do now as I'm a little unsure.
Thank you so much to all who have kindly read through this and took it on board, I really do appreciate it so any kind replies please know I am sincerely grateful for and thank you so much!!
I'd just really like some advice on this that's all as I don't want to be stuck in a contract and not be able to upgrade to a better more reliable infrastructure once it's fully available, the fixed price broadband just made me feel a lot better due to my previous ISP.
I hope all is well and sending much love to all who are reading this right now
You can only make sensible informed decisions on what is known today - the annual price increase formula is known - contract fixed term end is known - the date when BTOR (let alone Plusnet) will be able to provide FTTP in your location is at present not confirmed.
Thank you so much for the kind reply @Townman, I really appreciate this so thank you!!
I did call the customer services team but they said there was nothing they could do, only thing I was able to get was to continue my contract for two years, no discounts (although my bill isn't overly high anyway) and no give and take about the contract thing or the fixed price thing either, which I understand if that's not a thing anymore it's just one of the best things Plusnet had which made us feel better as a customer, mainly due to a previous ISP as mentioned above.
I agree with you about the fibre thing being unfair, specially in the area's where it's still not available. This is no fault of Plusnet (or any of the ISP's) but we are now in a time where these things are becoming a necessity to be able to support the things we need the internet for; I mean imagine if they still didn't upgrade from dial up there is no way you'd be able to run anything now and with things advancing so fast, it's not going to be long until this is a necessity to be able to function and this is what I mean about being tied into a two year contract without being able to move to the better infrastructure which I think is a bit unfair.
Plusnet have been absolutely fantastic for me, they have given constant wonderful support and even moved a master socket for me when I was having a lot of problems which is also a reason why I don't want to leave them but I don't want to be tied into a two year contract and not be able to upgrade or move to a more stable infrastructure when they have pretty much started the work in my area (and a street near by is complete), I'm going to potentially end up stuck on an old setup while everyone else is on the better, more reliable internet service.
I did ask about this and I was told I wouldn't be able to do it, eventually this should be standard for everyone to be on this new setup as this is how the service is growing to support what we have today but we have been lagging behind on the internet for a long time now which is why they're finally rolling out this fibre network, those copper wires are over 100 years old believe it or not and we are currently playing catch up in the UK.
Of course that's a completely different conversation and no fault of Plusnet (or any ISP) as they can only give the service through the infrastructure they have available to them but as this is moving across and finally upgrading now, I don't want to be stuck on a two year contract and not able to do this which is what will be the case if I renew my contract now.
It's all confusing to be honest, I just wish there was more leeway about this because I do eventually want to be on the full fibre as opposed to the FTTC setup.
Thank you so much @Townman for you kind reply and for taking the time out also to do this, I really appreciate it dearly
