OK, this will either be a chance for my kids to shine or eat some humble
pie... but I like the way a little competition can shake things up. This
week, I'm having my kids go through all the L&L focused quizzes in
preparation for taking the L&L test either on Friday or Monday... I think
they'll get Monday if they work hard on these... Anyway, I propose to the
august assemblage here the chance to swap scores on a Lang and Lit test.
I'll make it from questions in the DemiDec focused quizzes and ask that
those who take the test be willing to share scores with me and any other
school taking the test. I'll make an Excel spreadsheet with names of schools
and scores of all honors, scholastic, and varsity students taking it. No
need to use names at this point... just numbering the highest score as #1
and moving down should do the trick. You know who your kids are, anyway...

I'd ask that your kids take the test in the really near future, so we can
get an idea of where they are at this point in the early school year.

If you'd like, I could also include a "ringer" school of fake stats to goose
your kids along, no matter how good they're doing. If not, just the real
scores, ma'am.

Let me know if you're interested, and I'll get a side mailing list of
scrimmagers set up so I can distribute the test and score info. If this
works out, I'll be happy to organize further scrimmage events as the year
marches on.

We would be game for this, except I'm not covering LL until November.  We just did history (SQ) for the first 4 weeks, and we started Music this week.  We'll do that for 3 weeks, then Art for 3 weeks, then Science for 3, then LL for a couple (they'll be reading the novel during Fall break in October, right before the Science).  We have our district competition on November 16th and 17th, and for the first time in my 18 years of coaching, we're the defending district champion--so we'll have a target on the back of our heads.  North High is pissed because they were the 5-time district champion as well as 3-time regional champion, so it will be a real North-South battle!!

Sounds great... if it was last May!  We're doing SQ now... but a couple months ago we could have taken on all challengers!  Catch you on the next subject, maybe?

PS. Very envious, Todd. I have 5 on my team so far but until High School Musical finishes at Thanksgiving, I can’t even get started because everyone on the team is in play practice every night. But that’s life in a small high school (200 kids). So, when State rolls around we’ll have “recency” on our side. ;-) Last year we pulled off 3rd over all and 1st in Small Schools. Woohoo!

Dean, we are working on L&L right now, I doubt we can be through by
Friday, but probably by next Friday (so if you are not giving the test
until Monday would that be to late to compare?). We would be happy to
play along with the mini-scrimmage concept. Which Demidec L&L test are
we using for comparison?

P.S. we are not a super power, but we do tend to score around 40K at
regional's...but since we are in California that does not even make
State some years.

Hi Dean,
Count MCHS in. MCHS is finishing the short selections next week. We
have already completed some of the FQ's. I can forward those scores to
you.
Maybe this will motivate, inspire, dare I say embarrass, some students
to work harder. I have a class of 18, so I will send all scores. The
ones with astericks are returning from last year's team.
FUN!

Hiya Sharon! You guys are 2A, correct? Immaculate Heart is holding the "First Annual" Small School Scrimmage in late October. :D

I was planning on talking to you on Friday to invite you guys down to Tucson, if you're interested. I'm using this event as the "prime motivator" for my kids this year. I mean, we may have only 70 kids in the school but we don't want to be decimated at our own scrimmage. So far it's working like a charm... We'll see how long THAT lasts.

Look for me at Coach's meeting and we'll set up a date that works for the majority of us small guys!

I wondered how long it would take before some one referenced that little know document (yes apparently he was a relative somewhere along my family tree).

Thanks Dean, just send me the details of which L&L test we are to take and I will send scores as soon as we complete it. I have a group of about 18 but some are clearly not going to stay for much longer.

We're thinking about having a mini meet in house on Sat. Oct 6. Kind of a
8:30 to noon t hing. 5 tests, everybody bring snacks and pitch in for gold
silver and bronze rubber bracelets (that the kids are all wearing) We did
that last year and it was fun. It was VERY laid back. We didn't limit the
number of kids per school OR award an overall team (although we could
provide stats)

Last year we had Hillcrest, Rangel, Skyline and hopefully will add Lincoln
and BA to that mix this year. Woodrow are you out there? Frances G can you
hear me?

I'm still waiting for permission to put this on the calendar, but please
pencil it in.

OK, I will get the test together and have it ready for access on Monday. My
kids wanted the weekend to study more, the precious dears. So here's how it
works:

1. I upload the test to a secret place on my website. Should be ready by
Monday.
2. I send the link to the test to this list.
3. Those interested in getting the key and sharing scores should contact me
at my school email address: dean.webb at risd dot org.
4. When you send me your scores to the above email address, I'll send you
all other scores and the day I received them, in case you're concerned about
people having more days to prepare or something like that. I'll make a
distribution list so I can send updates of the scores as they arrive.

The test will not have critical reading on it. It will have 25 RBOC/Stephen
Crane questions and 25 short selection questions, in keeping with the equal
balance both recieve on the USAD test.

If you're not ready for L&L just yet, no problem. After your kids have had a
week to cram on the test, feel free to hit them with it and their scores
should be about on par with the others on the test. I think. We'll see. If
this works out, as I've said, I'll try and set up some more online
scrimmages.

Well, we cleaned up. Literally. Threw our banana peels into the trash can.

No other school came close to us. Literally. :-) Nearest school had to be at
least five miles away.

We drove by Hillcrest on the way back, just in case, then did some SuperQuiz
testing in my room. No big loss for us. We had fun, ate donuts, and got to
know each other better.

I don't know if we can make it next week - we'll see on Wednesday if anyone
can - but if we do, we'll let you know.
