It seems significant that this is also the year in which we have been featured in a documentary that has been nominated for an Academy Award. We had a chance to watch the entire film as an organisation recently, and we would like to make our views clear. The film is a moving and powerful document, but its presentation of Khabar Lahariya as an organisation with a particular and consuming focus of reporting on one party and the mobilisation around this, is inaccurate. We recognise the prerogative of independent filmmakers to present the story that they choose to, but we would like to say that this eclipses the kind of work and the kind of local journalism we have done for twenty years, the reason we are different from other mainstream media of our times. It is a story which captures a part of ours, and part stories have a way of distorting the whole sometimes.
In our 20 years of practising independent journalism, it has been a foundational value to be deliberate about how and who we include in the frame or story, about corroboration, about multiple perspectives. These values are not reflected in the version of ourselves we see in the film.
And so, to people all over the world who are watching us, maybe even hero-ing us, we want to say that ours has not just been the easy-to-digest, heartwarming story of the small figure talking back to the big powers in a time of political change. It has not been about sweeping into the rallies and offices of just one particular political party and asking difficult questions. In our two decades, we have had a newsroom with women differing on political opinions and ideologies. In 20 years, we have reported on (and befriended) many parties in Uttar Pradesh that have said they will stand for the rights of the poor, the marginalized, and we have shown them all the mirror when they have not done what they said.

But Sharif, 74, was removed from office in 2017, unable to complete his term in office due to an array of corruption charges against him. Along with his daughter, Maryam, he was sentenced to jail for 10 years in 2018, days before the last national election.
The biggest challenge before the Sharifs will be to wrestle back their support base from Khan, who despite being in jail under multiple sentences, remains a popular force, especially among urban youth with a strong digital presence.
The party was founded by his maternal grandfather and former Prime Minister Zulfikar Ali Bhutto, then led by his mother, two-time Prime Minister Benazir Bhutto. The 35-year-old Bhutto Zardari has big boots to fill.
In the past, the MQM-P has always formed alliances with the parties leading the country nationally. It was in coalition with the PTI after the 2018 elections but switched loyalties over to the PDM after April 2022.
While it provides an option to voters disillusioned with the existing political system in the country, it has just three candidates contesting National Assembly seats across the country, which limits its impact.
Similar to the AWP, the HKP struggles with financial resources to put up candidates in more constituencies and will be contesting from one city only with two National Assembly candidates and one provincial candidate.
The party is seen as being made up of a large number of electable candidates with strong personal influence in their native areas. It hopes to win enough seats in the elections to play a part in the formation of the next government.
Some of those contestants have been part of the PTI in the past, but this time are choosing to participate on their own. Others are young independent candidates without mainstream political affiliations.
Kiran Rao, who kicked off her career as an assistant director, recently recalled the time when she worked as an AD on the sets of Aamir Khan-starrer Lagaan, where she was frequently yelled at by seniors.
Panchayat Season 3 has a distinct whiff of Mirzapur, which isn't good news for Panchayat's ardent fans. This shift from light-hearted village tales to intense, politically charged drama feels jarring, leaving viewers longing for the feel-good essence that originally drew them to the show.
Jay Oza opened up about filming Gully Boy's confrontation sequence between Ranveer Singh and Vijay Raaz where he used an additional bulb as a symbolic representation of strained father-son relationship.
Indian Express has extensively reported how exorbitant star fees and outrageous demands of actors and their entourages--make up, hairdresser, stylists, spot dada-- have stripped off dignified pay for artistes in other departments.
A Supreme Court judge said, State must take responsibility for the education of the child. If the allegations are true, this should shock the conscience of the state", as reported by Live Law.
The case was being heard by Supreme Court bench of Justices Abhay S Oka and Justice Pankaj Mithal. The bench of justices directed the Uttar Pradesh government to appoint a senior IPS officer to probe the case, terming the incident as "serious".
The video of the incident that became viral on social media shows a small boy standing in tears while the Neha Public Schools' principal Tripta Tyagi urges students to beat up the child citing his Muslim identity.
Omittance of Communal TargettingOn Monday the Supreme Court highlighted several lacunae in the probe of the slapping incident that shook the nation. The apex court mentioned that the First Information Report (FIR) that was registered had omitted the communal angle as pointed by the father of the child and was evident from the video.
"In the first complaint by the father, he has alleged that teacher is making objectionable comments against a particular religion. In so-called non-cognizable report, same allegations are there. In the FIR, these allegations are not there", the judge said.
Shoddy probe by UP governmentThe Supreme Court also rapped the Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath government for conducting a shoddy probe of the matter. "Considering the manner in which the police have taken action, and especially in the light of the fact that though a cognizable offence was committed and a NCR was registered, investigation shall be done by a senior IPS level officer nominated by the State Government within one week. The officer so nominated shall go into the question whether proviso to Sec 75 of the JJ Act and 153A IPC have to be invoked" the SC said as reported by Live Law.
Right to Education and CounsellingThe Supreme Court asked Uttar Pradesh government to provide a report on the Right to Education Act (RTE) in the state, besides ensuring proper counselling for the victim child and other students involved in the incident.
It said there is a prima facie case of failure on the part of the Uttar Pradesh government in complying with the provisions of the RTE Act, which deals with providing quality, free and compulsory education to children up to 14 years, without any discrimination on the basis of caste, creed or gender.

In 2023, the Himalayan region has borne witness to an onslaught of disasters, from the sinking of Joshimath in Uttarakhand to floods and landslides in Himachal Pradesh, a glacial lake outburst in Sikkim, and the recent tunnel collapse near Barkot in Uttarakhand. While these events may seem disparate, they actually form a connected narrative revealing the repercussions of haphazard development in the region, particularly in Uttarakhand. The prevailing development model of the Himalaya, spanning from Ladakh to Arunachal Pradesh, poses a significant threat to the ecosystem of the mountains.
Dismissing a Himalayan disaster, such as a cloudburst or a flash flood, as merely a natural occurrence overlooks the fact that the increased frequency and intensity of these climate events are due to the overall development paradigm chosen for the planet, specifically for the Himalayan region. The geology of most of the Himalaya is unstable and dynamic, and the mindless greed and aggression of planners, policymakers, and government agencies are costing us the Himalaya itself.
The project has navigated a legal labyrinth by manipulating and altering laws to facilitate its progress. Even the Supreme Court has played a role in this saga, allowing the bypassing of the environmental impact assessment process mandated for projects exceeding 100 km. A token environmental assessment was conducted but not the one mandated for a project of this scale, as on the books it is not a single project but 53 small ones. This reflects a systemic failure in ensuring compliance with environmental norms.
The biggest casualty of the project is the rich Himalayan flora and fauna. As stated above, the project proposes and mostly has cleared approximately 600 hectares of forest land. With over 56,000 trees being culled, there is now patch isolation and reduced canopy cover, affecting the overall forest area of Uttarakhand, a State known for its biological wealth. The endless felling of trees has created several landslide zones in the last couple of years.
