"The Ethics of Appropriating Intimate Audiovisual Documents"
Description:
When filmmakers appropriate intimate, personal documents of people to whom they have no direct relationship - for instance, the 8mm home movies of a stranger - there is a question of what constitutes an ethical reuse of such documents. How can filmmakers reuse such documents without violating the right to privacy of the filmed subjects, particularly when getting permission to do so is impossible? This talk explores a few strategies filmmakers have used to grapple with this issue.
