Book Reading: Gaia’s Garden
Sunday, February 7
2:00 pm – 4:00 pm
Coralville Public Library

Taproot Nature Experience Book Club, in partnership with Backyard
Abundance, hosts a book reading of the ecological gardening and
permaculture guide Gaia’s Garden by Toby Hemenway.
Permaculture is an integrated set of principles and methods for
designing, setting up and running sustainable human systems. It is the
art of respecting nature and working with it, rather than against it,
to cultivate land, plants, animals and people by fostering mutually
beneficial relationships between them.

The ethics of permaculture are centered on care for the earth and
for all the living beings upon it, including people. For a
permaculturist, cooperation with other beings, rather than
competition, is the key to success. Success is measured in diversity
of life, and the wellbeing of all. A curious thing happens when you
study permaculture: you begin to have a sense of optimism about how we
really can save the earth.
We invite you to join us for a discussion on permaculture principles
and ecological design on February 7th from 2-4 at the Coralville
Public Library. The discussion will be based on topics presented in
one of the best books on permaculture, Gaia's Garden by Toby
Hemenway. In the book, Mr. Hemenway describes how to design and
implement beautiful, self-maintaining gardens that benefit both people
and wildlife.

Ecological designers from Backyard Abundance will be available to
discuss the book, show examples of landscape designs that are based
upon the book, and answer questions. Books are available at Prairie
Lights Bookstore. You do not need to have read the book to come and
participate.

This presentation is part of the Backyard Abundance “Seeds of
Sustainability” event series and is a precursor to its mid-March
presentation and two-day workshop with renowned ecological designer
Dave Jacke. We strongly encourage you to visit the Backyard Abundance
website to learn more about, or register for, this fantastic event.
Taproot will be providing children a two-day nature experience for the
course of the workshop, and we would love to see you all there!
