Backyard Abundance is a Johnson County nonprofit that was founded in
2006 to fill a community need for comprehensive environmental
education. Public events, yard tours, workshops, and presentations
have reached over 1500 residents and have successfully demonstrated
how to improve water quality, grow food, and conserve natural
resources. The Seeds of Sustainability workshops will launch an on-
going series of classes and events entitled Create Abundant Landscapes
that will teach residents how to improve the resiliency of their
landscapes and their community.

March 12-14, Backyard Abundance will host an exciting weekend workshop
entitled Regenerating Communities, Ecosystems and Landscapes by
Design, featuring Dave Jacke. Mr. Jacke is known nationally for his
groundbreaking research on innovative ways to sustainably grow food,
improve water quality and increase the resiliency of communities. He
is the author of the award-winning two-volume book entitled Edible
Forest Gardens. Since the 1970s, he has designed, built and planted
sustainable landscapes for homes, farms,
universities and communities in many parts of the United States and
overseas.

The workshops will focus on using nature’s ecosystems as models for
food production and community design. Because healthy ecosystems
maintain, fertilize, and renew themselves naturally, mimicking them
can help us create landscapes of high productivity and deep beauty.
The result is a resilient, highly collaborative community that uses
less energy and produces little pollution.
