On July 24 and 25, Backyard Abundance is sponsoring a weekend class entitled “Design an Abundant Landscape.” Co-teachers are Fred Meyer, Director of Backyard Abundance, and Jason Grimm, Landscape Designer and Food System Planner with Iowa Valley Resource Conservation and Development. The class is held at Willowwind School, 950 Dover Street in Iowa City.

Class participants will learn how to design inviting and beautiful outdoor spaces that mimic the low-maintenance characteristics of healthy ecosystems. Topics include defining goals, creating a vision, analyzing a landscape, designing outdoor rooms, creating efficient pathways, and supporting wildlife.

The yard of the New Pioneer Food Co-op administration building will be used in class activities resulting in a complete edible landscape design concept for the area. The August 28 and 29 “Create an Edible Landscape” class will refine and implement the design.
