Backyard Abundance Plant Sale
April 28, 10:00 AM - 12:00 PM

Get a jump on spring plant shopping at the Backyard Abundance plant
sale fundraiser. Many herbs and vegetables are heirlooms and were
organically grown by volunteers. All fruits and nuts were sourced as
locally as possible and were carefully chosen to maximize yield and
thrive in the Midwest. Your purchases help host free yard tours and
presentations in our community throughout the season.
Other interests: Silent auction, seed swap, mushroom growing kits,
urban chickens, locally-made garden tools.
Build a Cold Frame

Jason Grimm, Food System Planner with Iowa Valley RC&D, will
demonstrate how to build a cold frame using reclaimed materials from
Habitat ReStore. You will also learn season extension techniques, the
best plants to grow in cold frames, and how to create microclimates in
your landscape.

Food Forest Film Screening

In partnership with the Landlocked Film Festival, we will screen the
film Establishing a Food Forest. In the film, world renown
permaculture designer Geoff Lawton, demonstrates how to design and
implement highly productive food systems that require very little
maintenance and energy.

Create a Permaculture Garden

The University of Iowa Student Gardeners will host this cultivating
community event focusing on the creation of their new garden site.
Attendees will survey firsthand the new garden location and provide
input and perspective to the formation of this new garden space. This
discussion of the new garden will focus on permaculture design with an
emphasis on cultivating herbs, salad greens, and eventual perennial
vegetation.

Edible Landscape Design

Learn how to create a beautiful edible landscape from the comfort of
your home during this online event sponsored by the Iowa State
Extension. You will learn permaculture principles that enable the
creation of a low-maintenance, edible landscape that improves
environmental health.

Playscape Planting

As part of the Nature Explore residential playscape project, Zeb
Buckley and Leana Guerin have created a yard that improves their
children’s skill development and wellness. At this hands-on planting
project you will learn to:
· Prepare soil for blueberry bushes
· Properly plant trees and shrubs
· Begin implementing child-engaging features in a landscape

Urban Woodland Tours

Several Iowa City residents are increasing the health of their urban
woodlands through restoration efforts. In early summer, tours of these
beautiful landscapes will give you a firsthand look at a healthy,
Midwest woodland.

answer your questions.

Abundant Garden Tours

Joyce Miller and Jason Grimm host a June tour of their neighboring
landscapes. Both yards feature a dizzying variety vegetables arranged
in formal and informal gardens.
Jason is the Food System Planner for the Iowa Valley RC&D. Get ideas
for how to create tidy gardens that flow throughout a landscape. A
rain garden and a hoophouse filled with greens and vegetables

Joyce is a permaculture designer who knows how to maximize growing
space. Learn how to effectively use leaves and reuse materials to
create fertile garden beds.
Snacks and fun conversations with fellow gardeners will be provided.
