Hi all.

For those that are interested in taking forward Abundance, I'd like to raise an issue I've been trying to resolve this autumn re: the e-mail and website for Abundance.

I've been having an ongoing saga with the e-mail and website. Dreamhost, who have hosted the website for the last 4 years, made a mistake when we transferred it over to our control (from the personal hosting account of the friend of the person who set up Abundance). I haven't fully got my head around the technical details, but the main point is that we should have been paying for e-mail hosting but weren't. To cut a long story short, I am now getting charged $10.95 a month by Dreamhost. I made a complaint about the mistake and misinformation I received, and have been given one month's credit. It has taken me since the end of September to work this all out and in the meantime I have been paying the monthly fee (roughly £9 per month).

With the month's credit and the remaining donations we had, this has covered the fees up until the end of this month; thereafter I'll be paying it myself. There is also the yearly fee for keeping the registration of the website current, payable in September, around the same amount.

I'm happy to keep paying the monthy fee in the short term but my feeling is that we should cut our losses and lose the e-mail address and website and migrate to a free wordpress and gmail/hotmail/whatever address. What does anyone think? Perhaps a meeting in January for some consensus on it and other communication ideas?

Hey Valla,

That seems sensible to me, in case no one else gets back to you. Happy to split the monthly charges with you for the next couple months too if that's any help.

Hijacking to give you an update on our pickles. I've had some of the sauerkraut (brought some to our office Christmas party!) and it's pretty good. I've left it to ferment a bit more while we're in the US. Haven't had any of the kim chi although it was well submerged when we left. How are yours going? We'll have to schedule in an eating event!

Hi Valla,

I think we should definitely move to a free website and email service as you suggest and as you suggest we could discuss this at the next meeting in January.

I have no IT skills to offer for this personally but hopefully someone from the group will able to do this for the group.

Best Wishes for the Christmas and New Year to all btw

Hi Valla,

Thanks for the update! I would agree that Abundance could move to a free gmail address and website instead, especially since I'm not sure we'll be using the account much until Autumn arrives. Is it possible to save all the content first so we can reuse it?

Best Wishes,
Jess

Hi.

Sorry for the delayed response. I'm not sure about the content, I'll try to find out.

Would anyone like to meet to discuss? Or can we make a decision online?

I think that a meeting would be good, which could deal with all the online IT stuff but also a bit of discussion about what to do next year, how to organise etc perhaps

I'll create a doodle poll this week and circulate?

Can we hold at the SHRUB?

Here are some options based on my availability. If it seems that none of the times suit a lot of people, I can do another one.

Hi.

Apart from myself, only one person has filled in this poll. So by that I'm assuming no one wants to meet to chat about this. That's fine by me but I would like to sort it out.

I've done some research, and propose the following option
  • Migrate the website from its current host to a free wordpress site. There is a process whereby the databases for it can be saved and imported to the new site. I can do this.
  • This would mean we would lose in...@abundanceedinburgh.com. It would be easy to set up another free e-mail account and e-mail all contacts with the new e-mail account. Would someone else be able to do this?

A second option would be to shut down the website and lose the e-mail address and start from fresh.

I would appreciate some consensus on this, especially from those wanting to take Abundance Edinburgh forward. Thoughts anyone?

Hi Valla and all,

I am personally very enthusiastic about helping to make Abundance happen again. But I never manage to meet through the doodle polls which is why I have not filled it in. For some reason my own availability never gels with everyone else's - perhaps because a lot of my evenings are taken up with gigs and rehearsals etc. And also I am pretty useless at online stuff so there is a limit to what my administrative input can be.

But I have always enjoyed being part of an email group, and am part of the boaters group at present which seems to work for me and I even manage to meet with the boaters through that email group. So I think emails could work for me if that is any help.

I should be happy to meet up and talk about this, and am very happy to collaborate with you and Clement and anyone else who is around. Can you just give me a couple of alternatives for a meeting and I will make myself available?

I hope you are well.

Best for now.

Kim

Hi Valla,

I'm sorry that no-one else than you and I have filled the doodle poll. Maybe people have no time at the moment but it would be nice if people from the group could at least let us know if that's the case via a quick email so we can work out how many people are still up for being involved and how to organise as a result.

Thanks for your email Kim and hopefully we can find a time that suits you to meet up. Since you seem very busy with gigs and practices, perhaps you could suggest when you would be free and see if that works for other people?

My understanding is that food sharing has taken on the admin side of abundance and therefore there is probably no need for a separate website and email, especially if no-one has the time or skill to keep it up to date.

I think the best way to handle this would be to meet up to make a decision but also to make the changes online during the meeting as a group so we'd need to have a computer and internet access.

I am still a bit confused on how to navigate/handle the google group emails and the google drive so it would be good to go over this together as a group at the meeting as well, at least for me.

Have a good sunday

Clement

Hi all,

I stopped getting these emails in my inbox for some reason, so sorry I haven't been seeing them / replying! I'm happy to move the website and email to a free account.

I'm also happy to attend meetings and chat about organisation if there's still a group that would like to meet. Things are pretty busy at Food Sharing at the moment, so I was thinking we could put a big effort into organising and recruiting new helpers in late summer so that we're ready for autumn?

Best Wishes,
Jess

Jess,

Not sure if you are getting this but Valla, Kim and I are meeting at 7pm tomorrow at the restaurant Spoon (roughly opposite the festival theatre) to move the website and email to a free system.

Obviously, it'd be great if any all abundance enthusiasts came to this to help as some of you may have some ideas on which free platform could be used instead and whether the food sharing email and google drive if there's one could be used for abundance for example.

Clement
