Unplug everything from the back of the cable box. Wait a minute or two. Plug it all back in. Let it reload. My sound came right back on. I have an lg. Smart tv and Im on direct tv. Had great sound for netflix. No sound for tv programs
If you have cable or satellite try unplugging everything connected to your cable or satellite box. Wait a minute or two, then reconnect. I had this same problem & it restored the sound on my TCL Roku TV. I have Spectrum cable.
I did not have tv sound, but Netflix sound on my TCV roku tv. I unplugged the HDM! cable and the power cord to the back of the cable box. I came back a few minutes later and plugged them both back in. Success!!
I can connect my tv to my macbook pro through a HDMI cable and the picture shows up perfectly. However, the sound goes through my laptop speakers and not through the tv. When I go into Preferences --> sound --> output, there is not option to select for the hdmi, just the internal speakers. How can I get the sound to go through the tv instead?
It also works if you press Option key with the volume button on the keyboard or you can go into the System Prefs and change the sound output preference. Disconnecting the HDMI cable returns the setting to default.
In my situation, I could see the HDMI option in Settings. I tried restarting both computer and screen, interconnected and not; went through all settings on both and nothing helped. Then, all of a sudden, the power went out. Macbook kept going on battery as the TV shut down. A couple of minutes later, power was back on and everything was working fine.
Thank you so much this information! I also have a 2009 Macbook and Insignia TV. And nothing I did would work until I found your post about using the auxiliary cord. For others who are having the same problem, I would add that I do not have a "pc audio in" on my tv. Mine says DVI audio in. Even after using this auxiliary cord, the option to select your tv still does not show up under Preferences>Sound>Output. However, under the Input tab, there was an option for Audio Line in Port and I choose that. My tv remote doesn't work (other than volume) once the laptop is hooked up to my tv so I would be curious how KimchiGyrl is able to use hers.
I juat bought a 13" MacBookPro with retina display. I followed all your suggestions but still no sound coming out of the TV. I'm planning to call an apple adviser, as I'm still within the 3 months full support timeframe. My sound system on my HDTV TV can come directly from the TV or from a hooked up stereo system. I tried it either way with no success. I probably will have to get a senior advisor and even then I'm not sure they'll be up to solving my problem. If you have any other suggestions let me know.
I am having the same problem with no HMDI sound but, only with HBO GO. Other audio/visual streams work! I can HDMI stream from Facebook, Youtube, Starz, Showtime, Cinemax, Netflix, ESPN - ALL Work! I have tried changing to Foxfire from Safari, same problem with Foxfire. I have tried pretty much every suggestion on this and other threads - nothing. I am using a MacBook Pro 2010 15 inch. Funny thing is my wife has a 2014 Airbook 11 inch and HBO GO is working - for now. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
If your MacBook Pro is 2010 or earlier, your mini-DVI to HDMI adapter will not carry sound at all, and you'll have to use a separate audio cable plugged into your headphone jack then plugged into the TV. If the TV doesn't have a port for this, you'll need to use external speakers.
My macbook is connected through a mini port, it is currently connected and on "mirroring" however when I press and hold option and click on my voum button, it does not give me the option for HDMI or TV..... running Mountain Lion.
Turn your Mac off. Resetting the parameter RAM (PRAM) can fix a variety of problems related to volume control and sound output. This will reset a few settings but will not delete any of your data.
Everything works fine as far as watching tv, dvd etc. using the surround system. However, whenever I launch Netflix or Hulu I can only get sound through my tv speakers. There is no way I can figure out how to add those on the input menu in either the receiver or tv software. All connections (tv, dvd, cable box) are made using hdmi.
If you are 100% sure that both the TV and receiver have ARC, and that you've connected your HDMI cable to the ARC connections on both devices, and your HDMI cable can support ARC (should, but double check the specs), then in theory it should work. But as @wuzzzer suggests, using an optical cable to carry the sound from the TV will achieve the same goal and save you some frustration.
I had a similar issue with my older Denon AVR-4311Ci. It was relegated to the bedroom and I got a new bedroom TV (LG CX OLED). Both say ARC - not really compatible. Ended up the Denon ARC was "old" spec. I bought a new model (2020 or 21? Yamaha - RX-V4A) receiver and all works great. Not as powerful as the Denon - but it is the bedroom.
I use ARC and the HDMI cables are the same unless you want 4k then a "upgrade" is needed. Each TV uses a selected HDMI port for ARC (my Sony is #2) and ARC must be commanded on in the menu. I use OTA on my TV and use the ARC for audio.

My TV (KDL-50W829B) is set up to play through an external audio system, connected to the TV's optical output. Digital TV plays in stereo, PS3 plays in 5.1 surround (Dolby Digital) or stereo, Youtube plays in stereo (edit: no it doesn't, my mistake) - the TV and receiver appear to be set up correctly and compatible.
The problem is in the TV's Netflix app, where sound will play if the title has 5.1 surround audio, but NOT if it only has stereo audio. If I play a film with 5.1 sound (which works), and use the app's "audio and subtitles" menu to choose the stereo audio track, no sound plays. This is a problem for most TV programme streams, since they only have the stereo option.
The problem can be worked around by either setting the TV's digital audio output to "bitstream" instead of "auto", or by setting the sound output to "TV speakers" and letting the optical output act as a headphone output. Unfortunately, either workaround means 5.1 surround output is disabled.
It's rather inconvenient to have to switch audio settings depending on what's being watched. Do I have something set up wrong somewhere? Is my AV receiver somehow incompatible with the digital stereo audio output from Netflix, and if so what format would a replacement need to be compatible with? Or is the TV/app not passing audio to the optical output correctly?
This is beyond my level of knowledge im afraid. I cannot determine where the problem lies in - as it could be any of the three (Netflix, TV, AV Receiver). What I have done though, is escalate this thread to Sony Support in the hopes that their technical team can figure out where the issue is and advice accordingly.
AV receiver is a Yamaha RX-V361 (DD compatible), connected to the TV via optical cable. No sound field processing in place, used in "straight" mode (not that engaging them seems to make a difference to whether audio plays or not).
I tried Netflix support, but as with Sony's phone support I wasn't able to talk to anyone with enough expertise to get to a diagnosis. Both pointed the finger at my receiver but that could be a convenient "not our problem" excuse, and neither could tell me what I would need to look for in an alternative receiver that I don't have with my current one.
You have a weird/unique problem - Its normally the 5.1 where issues arise. But 2chan stereo, well..... Also, your problem is one that I hate, where multiple companies can blame each other and your left in the middle - However to be honest, Im going on the theory of the AV Receiver too....
On the TV, if you set Digital Audio Out to PCM (which I believe you are doing), this indicates that the AV Receiver is not compatible with DD - which I think your AV Receiver IS capable of it. Most cases, Auto is fine.
For Freeview HD, as I understand it the TV transcodes the AAC audio from the broadcast stream for output as DD over optical. For Netflix I think the audio is Dolby Digital Plus, which my receiver isn't compatible with but which doesn't fit into the optical (SPDIF) bandwidth anyway. The TV can decode DD+ and is supposed to (as all DD+ equipment should) convert to DD for optical outputs. It seems to be doing this correctly for 5.1 audio, but not for 2.0 audio?
One correction (sorry for the mistake! Must have got mixed up switching audio modes back and forth) - the Youtube app also has this issue. Don't know if it affects other apps too - I'll see if I can find something else to test.
Everything worked well for months. Suddenly, when we put Netflix on, no sound. There IS sound for a Netflix trailer, but not for an actual show. All other apps (Disney +, CW, Amazon Prime) are working fine. In another room, with another Roku, Netflix is working fine. What happened, and what needs to be done?
My son was able to fix it. I believe he went into Roku settings and then audio. And change the setting to stereo. Rather than the other one that was selected. And the hdmi setting was at auto. Restarted netflix and it was back to normal. Not sure why it started (never changed the setting to begin with) but it's worked fine since. Hope this helps!
