It would be nice to have a global setting to turn spell checking off by default and the ability to toggle it on/off for each individual task with a hotkey and/or menu icon button such as those used for bold, bullet list, justification, etc.

Hi Mike

Can you fill in the categories on the GG webpage pls so that we have a record of what version of Windows/TDL you are using?

So for now I guess you are talking about the inline-spell-checking provided by Windows 8.1 and above.

Currently this is wired to the global Windows setting so if that is turned on/off then it's also turned on/off in the comments.

As a result, I can certainly provide options to disable it either globally or just within the comments field but I wouldn't be able to enable it if it is turned off in Windows.

Thanks for the quick reply Dan!  I'm not as quick at checking on the thread, however, and just today saw your reply.  I'm not sure where the GG webpage is with the categories, so I'll state here that I am using Windows 8.1 and TDL 7.0.9.1 and look for the GG webpage for these settings afterwards. I am seeing spellcheck occurring in the comments of TDL (red underlines), so I imagine it is turned on globally in Windows.  The reason for my original post is that for many of my tasks, the comments I write are abbreviations, etc., so I have lots of red underlines even when I really don't care about the spelling. In fact, it is only for a small number of my tasks that I care about spelling, so it would be nice to not have the annoyance of the red underlines (just a thought - instead of turning on/off spell check for individual tasks, maybe just toggle to change the color of the spellcheck underlines to match the background ?). Thanks again Dan.

Mike, about your posting to the group... Are you using email? Mobile app? I'm curious because I know the categories can't be set from those UI's but I'd like to know if there is any other place where it's not set.

When we talk about setting the categories, you will see dropdown lists on new posts from here:
https://groups.google.com/forum/?hl=en#!categories/abstractspoon-todolist-support

While it's helpful to Dan when we use the dropdowns, we don't want you to switch how you're using this group. I'm just trying to understand the anomalies.

Thanks!

Hi Tony - I am using Firefox under Windows 8.1. I do now see the drop downs if I create a new post.  Must have missed them the first time. When I looked to add the information after I had posted, I did not find a way to do that. It looks like someone added them to this post for me and I do see them now above my original post.  This topic was my first post to any Google group, so I would chalk this up to rookie mistake.

Hi Mike

If you didn't already know, both the rich-text and simple comments fields are plugins, meaning that the app has no knowledge of their internals and vice-versa.

This means that there is currently no way to have spell-checking controlled on a per-task basis because the comments field doesn't know what the current task is and the app doesn't know that the comments field uses Windows' built-in spell-checking.

So the best I could do would be to allow it to be disabled from within the comments field, but without being able to remember the specific tasks that you disabled it on as you changed the selection.

Thanks Dan.  A toggle button on the comments field would be great even if it just turns on/off spell check for all tasks at once.  I should say that this is not a huge deal to me and I posted the suggestion before I knew the nature of the software and plugins.  I use ToDoList to jot down a lot of information associated with tasks, often with abbreviations that are picked up as spelling errors.  So, a lot of red underlines.  For my use, a toggle button could be used when I do indeed want to check the spelling, which sometimes I really do, but mostly I would leave the spell check off.  Thanks again for the great software!

I've added it to my list for 7.1

Dan, can you provide a bit more insight into the comment plugins, where they come from and how they're configured? I'd like to understand it better for usage, answering questions, and for documenting in the wiki.

Related: The CP home page hasn't been updated in a long time and this kind of info would seem to fit there to describe "the software" rather than "the application". References to IE6 and Netscape are a bit dated as well.

Thanks!

1. The comments plugins merely conform to the interfaces contained with IContentControl.h. Anyone can write them. They configure themselves.
2. The internals of the comments plugins are unknown to the app and vice versa.
3. The comments plugins have no understanding of tasks. They simply provide a UI for entering comments.
