I believe that this is standard Windows behaviour: If a droplist/combobox is open and you click 'away' the combobox closes and the focus remains on the combobox.
This is simple to reproduce in Windows Explorer:
1. Select a folder on the left hand side
2. Drop-down the folder location combobox at the top
3. Try clicking on a different folder while the combobox is open
4. Observe that the focus doesn't change
I'm not saying that this is intuitive but I need to be careful when considering deviating from Windows standards.
