Suggestion: make drag and drop possible (again) by clicking the icon of the task

Hi,
clicking the icon and bringing up the icon selection dialog is a complete annoyance for me (and possibly for many others).
Drag and drop actually works, but I don't see the task being dragged because it is hidden behind the icon selection dialog.
For drag-and-drop, it is typical to click on the icon of the item you would like to move. I think it is a general expectation from the users, almost every software uses the icons for drag-and-drop.

Maybe a simple change would help: bring up the icon selection dialog if the user clicks on the icon and releases the mouse button without moving the task somewhere else.
If it is hard to implement on touch screens (I don't know, I use mouse), the a long touch would be better for icon change (and probably an analogous right click on the icon).

Regards

Jozsef

Not sure what you mean here?

Hi Dan,

Sorry for the too short, therefore unclear post.

I meant to mention an alternative to the suggestion Jozsef made for initiating an icon change.
So it could be one of the following mouse actions:
  • long touch (least favorable to me)
  • right click
  • double left click
  • middle click
While a single left click would be used for selection/ moving.
In case the icon could be separately selected by direct left click (or would that always select the whole task?) F2 could be a keyboard shortcut to initiate the icon change?

Hope that was clearer :)

Thx Dan.
In fact, at first I was happy that it is much easier now to set the icon for the task...

Thx Ryan.

The main problem with these alternatives (except Right-click which is already supported via the context menu) is that they are 'non-discoverable' meaning no one uses them because no one knows that the option is supported.

That's why I chose the current solution: when you move the cursor over the icon (or any other attribute supporting 'inline' editing) it changes to a 'hand' indicating that clicking will 'do something', just like in a browser.

Good point, Dan!

And I see it can already be changed via the context menu, too.

So the question seems then, whether the click-edit option should be turned off?

As for me, I'm also running into the situation on a regular basis to accidentally open the "Select Task Icon" window.
But I also understand that for people who do work with icons (I currently don't) that it's much better for their workflow to be able to change it with a single click opposed to search for a sub menu item.

Maybe a solution would be to move this context menu item up a level under "Edit Task Title"?
But then people might argue, why not another one of the "Other Task Attributes" they might use more regularly...
Question here is, which options are needed most on average - or by Dan ;)
