Suggestion: Preferences > add button "Apply" for intermediate 'save' of the settings

In the "Preferences" window, I suggest to add a button "Apply" to do an intermediate 'save' of the settings 'as is' (i.e. record changes made until that moment, without terminating / closing the "Preferences" window.

I started that feature a while ago but ran into problems when I realised that to work properly I would have to also update the UI based on those changes and it was too hard at the time.
