- Babylon 5
- Dawning Star
- Masters of Orion
- Starfire (a later development to open what were thought to be dead end warp points)
- Infinity
In
many settings the Gate start and end points are fixed; you’re stuck to
that route. The the other is “dial a destination”. Which is usually an
evolution to the site-to-site, or it’s “Builder Tech”. But
site-to-site may be seen as the ONLY way in some settings. And to open
the route you need a special structure to force it open and hold it.
And the transiting craft may need a special engine.
Settings
like Babylon 5 have both FTL drives on ships and fixed Gates. The FTL
drives get you along, but using Gates can be like being the the FTL
Express Lane. Jump space may also be very turbulent and going off route
is certain death (at least everyone thinks so, since no one ever has
returned), so the Gates also provide essential navigation beacons. You
can do regular FTL drives, but the further you are off established
routes, or out in The Dark, the greater chance of catastrophe. Why
scouts have serious sensors. In Babylon 5 the Earth Alliance survey
ships were as massive as an Omega. Not only the major sensors, science,
weapons, and even an embarked group for defense, they carried the
broken down parts and frame for a Gate that they could assemble at the
right spot and then Jump home.
