Hello All: The ABA has a new insurance underwriter and they require advance notice of any activity that would be qualified for coverage under the ABA insurance.  They have a list of all our scheduled rides and anyone undertaking those events on the scheduled dates will be covered.  If however we shift the ride date for the reasons stipulated at the last AGM then we need to let the ABA know the new date TWENTY FOUR  (24) hours in advance.  We are going to have to leave this activity up to the regional ride coordinators; if the ride is moved then please send Heather Lothian at heather@albertabicycle.ab.ca  the date, start time and name of the ride 24 hours before the re-scheduled event.  I would also CC Peter so we have a couple of records of the notification being sent out.   It should be noted that unless the ABA has notification of any cycling activity that you are doing then it won't be covered by the ABA.  This includes training rides etc.  If you have a group going out on a non-scheduled ride and everyone is a member of the club, they must be a member of the AB Randonneurs, and the 24 hour notification is sent to the ABA then the ride will be covered by ABA insurance.  If there is a rider on the ride who is not a member of the AB Randonneurs then the ABA insurance for everyone on the ride is null and void.  This is regardless if they have ABA insurance from another club or team.  (I don't make the rules I'm just relaying them too you).  On a positive note we can now have riders join one of our 200KM events, twice, for no charge and be covered.  They must sign the waiver.

Stephen,
Thanks, that's great information.

I wonder about this part:
" If there is a rider on the ride who is not a member of the AB Randonneurs then the ABA insurance for everyone on the ride is null and void.  This is regardless if they have ABA insurance from another club or team."

I can see this policy being enforceable in a race where access to the course is controlled, but for randonneuring events on the open road, what's to stop a non-member from tagging along? You can't tell someone that they aren't allowed to ride on a public road.

Just a thought.

Joel: Good point, the key will be intent, it will be important that a rider not belonging to the club unofficially tag along for the ride or part of the ride. If a rider happens to be out and joins you or a group for a few minutes (short period of time) this will not pose a problem. Remember on an official Rando event you are not allowed to have help from non-participant riders. I have had riders join in my rides and have had to tell them they can't pull and can't hang out too long. Good judgement is key
