Hello All:

While riding with Wim this spring, we spoke about the possibility of
having a Fleche event in Alberta next season. That would be a lot of
fun, and if enough people participated, it would let us put faces to
names (for those of us who don't know a whole of our fellow members).

I've never ridden a Fleche, and only know a bit about what might make a
Fleche eligible to be 'officially' recognized:

1. Teams of 3 to 5 riders see how far they can ride in 24 hours.
2. Each team designs and submits their own route to the Fleche
organizer. Each route must be at least 360 km in length.
3. All routes, no matter where they start, end up at a common ending
point (do I read the word 'party' in here somewhere ?)
4. The completion of a recognized Fleche is required to qualify for the
ACP Randonneur 5000 title and pin.

There are other requirements, but I think the above describes in general
terms what it's all about.

Is there interest among club members to organize a Fleche in 2010? Does
anyone know about getting a Fleche recognized by ACP Paris?

Let the comments begin ................................

Greetings:

My understanding is that the brevet cards will have to be sent to Paris
for homologation. You will then receive a certificate in the mail, as I
did a few years back. I can check verify this with BC organization.

The Fleche date must be held within 60 days after Easter, so that would
make the May long weekend one of the choice dates

The date must also be submitted for inclusion on the official brevet
calendar.

Willi: The club has held these in the past and we also had an Alberta
team enter one that finished in Saskatchewan, we started out by
Drumheller somewhere. They are a real hoot, and make for great team
riding and involve strategic thinking and tactics. I banged my head
up so my riding maybe restricted to tours of wine country in the
future but I'm in if the doctor gives me the ok (and my wife), If not
then I can act as the organizer. Lets see what the interest level is.

Hi Willi,

What a wnderful idea. I am definely interested. I only know what I have read online. The only thing I have read that could be added to your info is that the Fleche is usually done between the 300 km and 400 km rides. I would suggest we try to have it as late in the season as we can get away with (condidering the wonderful Spring weather we seem to get around here). I have been trying to figuire out how I could do one in the next 2 years and I would love to do one in Alberta. I would also like to qualify for the ACP Randonnuer 5000 pin.

I believe that it was in about 1992 that there was a provincial fleche, and if I remember correctly, the end point was at the Provincial Legislative building in Edmonton. Bill Donner, or Bill van der Meer, or Dave Oliphant might have better memories and more details. Nevertheless I would be interested, but I am not the most powerful rider -- just spirited and cranky. One major difficulty is arranging transportation from the end point back home. "Fleche" means arrow, I believe, and the intent of the fleche is a one-way trip, not an out-and-back or loop. Correct me anyone if I'm wrong.

Hey Willi, it seems that it is about that time to have another
fleche. The best scenario is to organize the one way jorney having
either a sag wagon to pick up the group at the end, or end at a place
using easy trasit back such as VIA Rail where you jsut wheel your bike
on board. That could be a ride to Jasper as an example and using
another point along the line as our starting point. As I recall we
need to ride the last 40km in the last 2 hours but maybe that rule has
changed. I remember riding from Walsh AB to Regina and that last 40
km seemed to last forever. It takes a fair amount of planning but
with lots of time it can be done. Depending on when it is scheduled I
would be in. Ifg there was enough interest we could have 2 teams a
fast and a moderately paced group. Just some thoughts.

All I know about Fleches I've learned from the BC rando site, but they
sound fun and since I should have more time to ride next year (read:
be in shape to actually do one ;) ) I would potentially be interested.

Cheers,
