This has been a pet theory of mine for a while, mostly just something I try to guide my kids toward.  In a world that yet again may offer, or perhaps dictate, a life with less work in a person's life, hobbies should take an expanding slice of a person's time and personal achievement portfolio.  Problem is a lot of people don't structure their lives for achievement outside of work - really any adult hobby sport would do (or music, or chess, or quilting, whatever displaces fomenting anger on social media.

It's a different way of saying more people should become cyclists, and/or randonneurs.

So when you're pedalling endlessly, just think of yourself as an agent and leader of societal change!

Hi Stephen
Thanks. I am doing very well. Considering the severity of my injuries (when hit on July 3, 2022), my family and I consider
ourselves very lucky and grateful. When people call my recovery remarkable and a miracle (against most odds) we agree.
Many contributing factors.
(1) A passerby discovered me, phoned the RCMP- EMS, and noted that a guy in his early fifties was in bad shape
(underestimated my age by some 20+years)
(2) Within half an hour I was in UoA-ICU Edmonton..After 2.5  week there, transferred to Glenrose STI Rehab Centre.
No memory of the accident, UoA-ICU and first 2 weeks at Glenrose. There were also physical injuries.
UoA surgeons were unable to give my family any prognosis because things did not look good.
(3) The care I received at UoA and Glenrose was phenomenal. Very intensive - by people who are very dedicated and
committed to providing the best health care. Thank you does not cover it.
(4).Ongoing care since my discharge at the end of August 2022, mainly physiotherapy, physical conditioning
      (elliptical machine and stationary bicycle)
(5) discipline. patience and positive attitude (of course developed through randonneuring) and being very fit.
(6) incredible support from my wife, my family, friends, neighbours and community (cycling and speedskating)

I am back to doing most things I used to do before the accident. Like to get back to cycling on the road.
(Tried in the backyard -feels very good 🙂)

Wim

Wim,
Keep at it and very happy you continue to do well. Cosmin and I were impressed at how you were doing when we saw you at the Glenrose!

I also echo great to hear from you.

On another topic I'm planning to ride from the NWT border to the US border June 5- to 17 taking a few days off in the middle.  I'm doing 200 average per day and I'm asking for 2 things.
  1. Anyone who is doing the Strathmore 200 and doing prior training to get in touch with me so that I get out there also!
  2.  I know Stephen held his hell week 1 month prior to a 1200.  If June 5th is my target date what do you folks recommend for a training schedule?
  3. Any thoughts.   Dan
