Any idea who is spamming our site? It sure is a pain in the but,
maybe worse than riding 1200!
Hey spammer, please go away and quit ruining our site.

Dan,

Sorry I have been away and didn't notice the SPAM. I've cleaned out
the archives and banned the spammers. FWIW all online groups are being
SPAMed - we are nothing special.

I have two ways to stop the SPAM:

1) moderate 100% of the messages to the group

2) moderate only new people

If you want me to moderate the group that can be turned on on no
problem, but someone will need to volunteer to review and approve the
moderated messages. I don't have time to do this as I run a number of
sites and am quite busy.

Let me know how you'd like to proceed.

safe riding,

Vik

Vik,
for sure we should go with your option 2.
We should probably admit only people to post that have references from
at least one of the members.

I think that could cause issues as the club is small and new people
may not know anyone. I can set it up so that msgs from new people are
moderated automatically, but I need someone to volunteer for the job
of reviewing and approving these msgs....any takers?

cheers,

Vik

Well, I could volunteer to do this job. I am never far from a computer, I've been around (off and on) since 1992, and I could provide references. See a whole bunch of Rocky Mountain Randonneur newsletters from the early 90's. Bill van der Meer could also add his opinion. And besides, the rider from the Edmonton area have to prove they can do SOMETHING to contribute to the club. I don't see this as being a major headache. The only issue is if someone is trying to sell a whole bunch of used gear and they are pedalling their wares and not their cranks. But then again, you might be able to get some pretty good deals on a used set of toe straps. Never know when they'll come in handy -- or a slightly cracked and bleached white helmet from 1988. Well broken in, and barely needed except for the occasional face plant.

Vik, I can moderate as well. I think it's best to have more than
one...?

Sounds good Mike and you already have moderator privileges so go for
it.

Thanks Dennis I'll set you up as a moderator. The club can decide
what to do about for sale posts by members. Personally if we are
talking about selling a few items the member personally owns that
could be useful for other members I can't see the harm.

cheers,

Vik

You bet, Vik. Just let me know when all is set up for you, and I can help Mike if he needs help. Otherwise I can just watch out for the obvious and obliterate it to smithereens if found to be spam.
