Hello everyone,

I am new to Randonneuring and the idea really appeals to type of goals I like to set for myself. I am wondering if and when a 2024 schedule is going to be released in order to try and plan some rides this spring/summer. I am Edmonton based and would be looking at trying at least a 200 and 300 this year.

Thanks in advance, and hopefully see some of you out on the roads in 2024!

Hi Evan - thanks for connecting with the Alberta Randonneurs! Our 2024 brevet (ride) schedule will be available on our website in the next week or two. I'll post a note on this Google Group once it's up.
Cheers!
Matt

Just noticed that the 2024 rides are posted on the website. Do you do any group rides before the first ride on April 13th? I too am interesting in doing a 200 and 300 this year but would like to do a couple of group rides as well. I am in Calgary.

Thanks,

JP:  Happy to have you on board!  The challenge with organized rides before the middle of April is our capricious weather in central Alberta.  I recall the infamous "Crossfield 73" expedition where 4 or 5 of us set out to do the Penhold 300 only to ride into a freezing fog that iced up our brakes and drivetrains to the point where the bikes simply stopped being rideable.  I also took on the Banff-Jasper-Banff 600 one year on the May long weekend and nearly froze to death - my bottles with electrolytes literally turned to slushies!

I'd be happy to ride with you earlier in the year if the weather cooperates and we can do one of the routes as a permanent.  I also recommend the Highwood 300 done before the upper section opens to vehicles on June 15.  The road shoulder on the upper section is quite rough and gravely  so having the vehicle lane free to ride in makes for a less nerve racking ascent/decent.

Drop me a note anytime and we can discuss timing and routes if you want to get out ahead of Brevet season.

Cheers,

Phil Parker

Sounds great – thanks – I will definitely send an email in March if the weather permits.

 Thanks for emailing.

On the matter of the schedule - first up in the Calgary region is the Strathmore 200.  The provided map shows the Balzac start but i infer that like past years we'll be using the Country Hills A&W start/finish location?

I'm ambivalent as the A&W start is easy for me but I don't relish the Delacourt Highway finish coming into the City in the afternoon.  Just want to be clear.

I came to say I intend to join the Strathmore 200 to kick off the season with you guys, but my kids have a ski race that weekend unless all shuts down early... as a parent deferring to my duties ; )
I suppose I'd do the usual and ask for a solo ride on the Monday (or possibly my birthday Wednesday)  to be sanctioned or approved or whatever the right word is.
Let's hope for respectable spring weather otherwise it's all moot!

If we still allow the one week grace either side, you’d be ok. I’ll let a Calgary person reply. Can argue the weather will keep you off that day (still ok for skiing!). Hah.

This is a breakthrough for me - I’ve been looking at routes in advance, instead of just downloading them and being befuddled on the bike, especially long into a ride.  Here's a couple of preseason observations that are intended to be constructive!
- Elbow Falls 200 could probably use a rework in and out of town by a CRMA (Certified Randonneur Map Artist).  The completion of Stoney Trail looks to mess up the Calgary exit/reentry on the existing route.  I eyeballed it quickly and thought perhaps the Calgary Waldorf School and an exit out west might end up being the right equivalent distance and no foreseeable road work to need to reroute it in future years.  Aspen Landing visually makes some sense, but would cut off some distance, hence why I thought to suggest Waldorf.
- Strathmore 200 debate on A&W vs. Balzac: I too was torn.  I’ve just noticed (forgive me if I’m late to this) that just east of Balzac, north of Crossiron Mills, is a standalone A&W.  I thought for a few years there was only one in the mall food court.  That A&W location could be the perfect start and end… because refilling the grease is a good thing to do post ride.
- Wildrose 200 - on the ride calendar page, the links to the right go Map | Brevet Card | Directions.  For the Wildrose, the directions don’t match the map.  I think the map is right/current.  I think the directions are older.  Just needs a re-pdf from ridewithgps and upload to the web site.

Great observation Erik, the growth of Calgary and surrounding areas has made some of the traditional start/stops a bit challenging!

I hope that we have a get together in Calgary in a few weeks, perhaps with the Rogelli sizing kit and we can discuss some of the ride specifics and come up with a firm plan to update a few of these to make the start/stops a bit safer.  The Okotoks 200 is also in need of some TLC due to ring the ring road/22x expansion.

We can update the website with new versions of our ride-with-gps routes (someone's just got to do them... :).

I have ridden many Edm rides in 2020/2021 and have maps that I’ll get to Joel - new and old routes.

I can lend a hand doing the routes. I have a premium subscription to RWGPS and proficient with the App. I can get at some of them later this month. I'll start with the 200s Eric mentioned and throw the revised route up on a new thread for feedback and further adjustments

Thanks Stephen. I have the premium membership, but not quite the user experience!
